Covenant of Christ

Paragraph 1

1

6 And now I, Nephi, do not give the genealogy of my fathers in this part of my record, neither at any time shall I give it after upon these plates which I am writing, for it is given in the record which has been kept by my father; wherefore, I do not write it in this work, 2 for it sufficeth me to say that we are a descendant of Joseph. 3 And it mattereth not to me that I am particular to give a full account of all the things of my father, for they cannot be written upon these plates, for I desire the room that I may write of the things of God. 4 For the fullness of mine intent is that I may persuade men to come unto the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob and be saved. 5 Wherefore, the things which are pleasing unto the world I do not write, but the things which are pleasing unto God and unto those who are not of the world. 6 Wherefore, I shall give commandment unto my seed that they shall not occupy these plates with things which are not of worth unto the children of men.

Paragraph 1

1

6 Now I’m not providing my ancestors’ genealogy in this part of my record, and I’m not going to do so on these plates that I’m engraving since it’s provided in my father’s record; so it’s not included here. I’m content to say that we’re descended from Joseph. Moreover, I don’t care to provide a detailed account of all the events involving my father, since they won’t fit on these plates, because I need the space so I can write the things of God. My whole intent is to persuade people to come to the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob and be saved. Therefore I don’t write what’s pleasing to the world, but what’s pleasing to God and important for those who aren’t worldly. And so I’ll command my descendants not to fill these plates with things that aren’t valuable to mankind.

Paragraph 2

2

7 And now I would that ye might know that after my father Lehi had made an end of prophesying concerning his seed, it came to pass that the Lord spake unto him again, that it was not meet for him, Lehi, that he should take his family into the wilderness alone, but that his sons should take daughters to wife, that they might raise up seed unto the Lord in the land of promise. 2 And it came to pass that the Lord commanded him that I, Nephi, and my brethren should again return into the land of Jerusalem and bring down Ishmael and his family into the wilderness. 3 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did again with my brethren go forth into the wilderness to go up to Jerusalem. 4 And it came to pass that we went up unto the house of Ishmael, and we did gain favor in the sight of Ishmael, insomuch that we did speak unto him the words of the Lord. 5 And it came to pass that the Lord did soften the heart of Ishmael and also his whole household, insomuch that they took their journey with us down into the wilderness to the tent of our father.

Paragraph 2

2

7 Now I want you to know that after my father had finished prophesying about his descendants, the Lord spoke to him again, saying it wasn’t right for him to take his family into the wilderness alone, but that his sons were to marry suitable women so that they could raise up children to the Lord in the promised land. The Lord commanded him that my brothers and I were to return to the land of Jerusalem and bring Ishmael and his family back across the wilderness. So I went again with my brothers through the wilderness to go back up to Jerusalem. We went to Ishmael’s house and gained his confidence, then we told him the Lord’s words. And the Lord softened Ishmael’s heart and also his whole household’s, so that they went with us through the wilderness back down to our father’s tent.

Paragraph 3

3

6 And it came to pass that as we journeyed in the wilderness, behold, Laman, and Lemuel, and two of the daughters of Ishmael, and the two sons of Ishmael, and their families did rebel against us; yea, against I, Nephi, and Sam, and their father Ishmael, and his wife, and his three other daughters. 7 And it came to pass that in the which rebellion they were desirous to return unto the land of Jerusalem. 8 And now I, Nephi, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, therefore I spake unto them, saying — yea, even unto Laman and unto Lemuel — Behold, ye are mine elder brethren, and how is it that ye are so hard in your hearts and so blind in your minds that ye have need that I, your younger brother, should speak unto you? Yea, and set an example for you? 9 How is it that ye have not hearkened unto the word of the Lord? 10 How is it that ye have forgotten that ye have seen an angel of the Lord? 11 Yea, and how is it that ye have forgotten what great things the Lord hath done for us in delivering us out of the hands of Laban? And also that we should obtain the record? 12 Yea, and how is it that ye have forgotten that the Lord is able to do all things according to his will for the children of men, if it so be that they exercise faith in him? Wherefore, let us be faithful to him. 13 And if it so be that we are faithful to him, we shall obtain the land of promise. And ye shall know at some future period that the word of the Lord shall be fulfilled concerning the destruction of Jerusalem, for all things which the Lord hath spoken concerning the destruction of Jerusalem must be fulfilled. 14 For behold, the spirit of the Lord ceaseth soon to strive with them; for behold, they have rejected the prophets, and Jeremiah have they cast into prison, and they have sought to take away the life of my father, insomuch that they have driven him out of the land. 15 Now behold, I say unto you that if ye will return unto Jerusalem, ye shall also perish with them. And now if ye have choice, go up to the land and remember the words which I speak unto you, that if ye go, ye will also perish. For thus the spirit of the Lord constraineth me that I should speak.

Paragraph 3

3

As we traveled in the wilderness, Laman, Lemuel, two of Ishmael’s daughters, and two of his sons and their families rebelled against me, Sam, their father Ishmael and his wife, and his three other daughters. They rebelled because they wanted to return to Jerusalem. Now I was troubled because of the hardness of their hearts, so I spoke to them, to Laman and Lemuel, saying: You are my older brothers. Why are you so hard in your hearts and blind in your minds that you need me, your younger brother, to speak to you and set an example for you? Why haven’t you listened to the Lord’s word? 10 How can you forget you’ve seen an angel of the Lord? 11 How have you forgotten the great things the Lord has done for us, in rescuing us from Laban and letting us obtain the record? 12 And how have you forgotten the Lord can do everything for mankind according to His will, if they exercise faith in Him? So let’s be faithful to Him. 13 And if we’re faithful to Him, we’ll reach the promised land. At some time in the future, you’ll know the Lord’s word concerning Jerusalem’s destruction will be fulfilled, since everything the Lord has said about Jerusalem’s destruction is certain to happen. 14 The Spirit of the Lord will soon stop struggling with them, because they’ve rejected the prophets, thrown Jeremiah in prison, and tried to kill our father, driving him away. 15 Because of this, I tell you that if you choose to return to Jerusalem, you’ll die with them as well. Now, if you want to make that choice, go back up there. But remember the words I tell you, that if you go, you’re sure to lose your lives too. This is what the Spirit of the Lord compels me to say to you.

Paragraph 4

4

16 And it came to pass that when I, Nephi, had spoken these words unto my brethren, they were angry with me. And it came to pass that they did lay their hands upon me, for behold, they were exceeding wroth; and they did bind me with cords, for they sought to take away my life, that they might leave me in the wilderness to be devoured by wild beasts. 17 But it came to pass that I prayed unto the Lord, saying, O Lord, according to my faith which is in thee, wilt thou deliver me from the hands of my brethren? Yea, even give me strength that I may burst these bands with which I am bound? 18 And it came to pass that when I had said these words, behold, the bands were loosed from off my hands and feet, and I stood before my brethren and I spake unto them again. 19 And it came to pass that they were angry with me again and sought to lay hands upon me. But behold, one of the daughters of Ishmael, yea, and also her mother, and one of the sons of Ishmael, did plead with my brethren, insomuch that they did soften their hearts and they did cease striving to take away my life. 20 And it came to pass that they were sorrowful because of their wickedness, insomuch that they did bow down before me and did plead with me that I would forgive them of the thing that they had done against me. 21 And it came to pass that I did frankly forgive them all that they had done, and I did exhort them that they would pray unto the Lord their God for forgiveness. And it came to pass that they did so. And after they had done praying unto the Lord, we did again travel on our journey towards the tent of our father.

Paragraph 4

4

16 When I said this to my brothers, they got angry with me. And they took me by force because they were extremely angry. They tied me up with ropes in order to leave me in the wilderness to be eaten by wild animals as their plan to kill me. 17 But I prayed to the Lord, saying: O Lord, according to my faith in You, please free me from my brothers! Give me strength so I can break these ropes that have me tied. 18 When I said this, the ropes around my hands and feet came undone, and I stood in front of my brothers and spoke to them again. 19 And they got angry with me again and started to attack me. But one of Ishmael’s daughters and her mother and one of Ishmael’s sons pled with my brothers, and it softened their hearts and they gave up their determined efforts to kill me. 20 They regretted their wickedness, so they bowed down in front of me and begged me to forgive them for how they had treated me. 21 And I freely forgave them all they had done and urged them to pray to the Lord their God for forgiveness. And they did so. After they had finished praying to the Lord, we traveled back to our father’s tent.

Paragraph 5

5

22 And it came to pass that we did come down unto the tent of our father. And after I and my brethren and all the house of Ishmael had come down unto the tent of my father, they did give thanks unto the Lord their God, and they did offer sacrifice and burnt offerings unto him.

Paragraph 5

5

22 We went down to our father’s tent, and after my brothers and I and Ishmael’s family arrived at my father’s tent, they gave thanks to the Lord God and offered sacrifice and burnt offerings to Him.

Paragraph 6

6

8 And it came to pass that we had gathered together all manner of seeds of every kind, both of grain of every kind and also of the seeds of fruits of every kind.

Paragraph 6

6

8 And we had gathered all kinds of seeds: many kinds of both grains and fruit.

Paragraph 7

7

2 And it came to pass that while my father tarried in the wilderness, he spake unto us, saying, Behold, I have dreamed a dream, or in other words, I have seen a vision. 3 And behold, because of the thing which I have seen, I have reason to rejoice in the Lord because of Nephi and also of Sam; for I have reason to suppose that they and also many of their seed will be saved. 4 But behold, Laman and Lemuel, I fear exceedingly because of you. For behold, methought I saw in my dream a dark and dreary wilderness. 5 And it came to pass that I saw a man and he was dressed in a white robe; and he came and stood before me. 6 And it came to pass that he spake unto me and bade me follow him. 7 And it came to pass that as I followed him, I beheld myself that I was in a dark and dreary waste. 8 And after I had traveled for the space of many hours in darkness, I began to pray unto the Lord that he would have mercy on me according to the multitude of his tender mercies.

Paragraph 7

7

While my father was there in the wilderness, he told us: I’ve had a dream, or in other words, I’ve seen a vision. Because of what I’ve seen, I have reason to praise the Lord about Nephi, and about Sam as well. I have reason to think they will be saved along with many of their descendants. But, Laman and Lemuel, I’m very concerned for you. Indeed, it seemed like I saw a dark and gloomy wilderness. And I saw a man dressed in a white robe who stood before me. He talked to me and said I should follow him. As I followed him, I saw I was in a dark and dreary wasteland. After I had traveled for many hours in darkness, I began to pray to the Lord to help me, because of His many tender mercies.

Paragraph 8

8

9 And it came to pass, after I had prayed unto the Lord, I beheld a large and spacious field. 10 And it came to pass that I beheld a tree whose fruit was desirable to make one happy. 11 And it came to pass that I did go forth and partake of the fruit thereof, and beheld that it was most sweet, above all that I ever before tasted. Yea, and I beheld that the fruit thereof was white to exceed all the whiteness that I had ever seen.

Paragraph 8

8

After I had prayed to the Lord, I saw a large and spacious field. 10 Then I saw a tree with fruit that would make people happy. 11 I went and ate some of the fruit, discovering it was sweet beyond measure, better than all that I had ever tasted before. I noticed its fruit was white, brighter than I had ever seen.

Paragraph 9

9

12 And as I partook of the fruit thereof, it filled my soul with exceeding great joy; wherefore, I began to be desirous that my family should partake of it also, for I knew that it was desirable above all other fruit. 13 And as I cast my eyes around about, that perhaps I might discover my family also, and I beheld a river of water and it ran along, and it was near the tree of which I was partaking the fruit. 14 And I looked to behold from whence it came, and I saw the head thereof a little way off. And at the head thereof I beheld your mother Sariah, and Sam, and Nephi, and they stood as if they knew not whither they should go. 15 And it came to pass that I beckoned unto them; and I also did say unto them with a loud voice that they should come unto me and partake of the fruit, which was desirable above all other fruit. 16 And it came to pass that they did come unto me and partake of the fruit also. 17 And it came to pass that I was desirous that Laman and Lemuel should come and partake of the fruit also; wherefore, I cast mine eyes towards the head of the river that perhaps I might see them. 18 And it came to pass that I saw them, but they would not come unto me and partake of the fruit.

Paragraph 9

9

12 As I ate the fruit, it made my soul very joyful. So I began to wish my family would eat some of it too, since I knew it was better than all other fruit. 13 As I looked around, trying to catch sight of my family, I saw a river. It ran beside the tree whose fruit I was eating. 14 I looked to see where it came from and saw its source a little way off. At its source I saw your mother Sariah, Sam, and Nephi, standing there and looking lost. 15 I waved to them and yelled for them to come over to me and eat some of the fruit, which was better than any other fruit. 16 And they came over to me and also ate the fruit. 17 And I wanted Laman and Lemuel to come and eat some of the fruit too. Therefore I looked toward the source of the river to try to locate them. 18 I saw them, but they refused to come over to me and eat the fruit.

Paragraph 10

10

19 And I beheld a rod of iron, and it extended along the bank of the river and led to the tree by which I stood. 20 And I also beheld a straight and narrow path which came along by the rod of iron, even to the tree by which I stood; and it also led by the head of the fountain unto a large and spacious field, as if it had been a world. 21 And I saw numberless concourses of people, many of whom were pressing forward that they might obtain the path which led unto the tree by which I stood. 22 And it came to pass that they did come forth and commenced in the path which led to the tree. 23 And it came to pass that there arose a mist of darkness, yea, even an exceeding great mist of darkness, insomuch that they who had commenced in the path did lose their way, that they wandered off and were lost. 24 And it came to pass that I beheld others pressing forward, and they came forth and caught hold of the end of the rod of iron; and they did press forward through the mists of darkness, clinging to the rod of iron, even until they did come forth and partook of the fruit of the tree. 25 And after they had partaken of the fruit of the tree, they did cast their eyes about as if they were ashamed.

Paragraph 10

10

19 Then I saw an iron railing extending along the riverbank, leading to the tree next to me. 20 I also saw a straight and narrow path that ran along the iron railing all the way to the tree beside me. It also led by the source of the river to a large and spacious field, as big as the earth itself. 21 And I saw innumerable throngs of people, many of them pressing forward so they could reach the path that led to the tree I was standing next to. 22 They moved forward and started on the path leading to the tree. 23 Then a great dark cloud came up and those who had started on the path lost their way, wandering off and becoming lost. 24 And I saw others pressing forward. They came and caught hold of the end of the iron railing and moved forward through the dark clouds, clinging to the iron railing until they arrived and ate some of the fruit from the tree. 25 After they had eaten fruit from the tree, they looked around as if ashamed.

Paragraph 11

11

26 And I also cast my eyes around about and beheld, on the other side of the river of water, a great and spacious building. And it stood as it were in the air, high above the earth. 27 And it was filled with people, both old and young, both male and female, and their manner of dress was exceeding fine; and they were in the attitude of mocking and pointing their fingers towards those who had come up and were partaking of the fruit. 28 And after they had tasted of the fruit, they were ashamed because of those that were a scoffing at them; and they fell away into forbidden paths and were lost.

Paragraph 11

11

26 I also looked around and saw on the other side of the river an impressive and large building. It stood like it was in the air, high above the earth, 27 and it was filled with people — old and young, male and female — and they wore expensive clothing. They appeared to mock and point their fingers at those who had come up and were eating the fruit. 28 Those who had tasted the fruit were ashamed because of people scoffing at them, and they left, following forbidden paths and were lost.

Paragraph 12

12

29 And now I, Nephi, do not speak all the words of my father. 30 But to be short in writing, behold, he saw other multitudes pressing forward; and they came and caught hold of the end of the rod of iron. And they did press their way forward, continually holding fast to the rod of iron, until they came forth and fell down and partook of the fruit of the tree. 31 And he also saw other multitudes pressing their way towards that great and spacious building. 32 And it came to pass that many were drowned in the depths of the fountain, and many were lost from his view, wandering in strange roads. 33 And great was the multitude that did enter into that strange building. And after they did enter into that building, they did point the finger of scorn at me and those that were partaking of the fruit also. But we heeded them not — 34 thus are the words of my father — for as many as heeded them had fallen away. 35 And Laman and Lemuel partook not of the fruit, said my father.

Paragraph 12

12

29 Now I don’t write all my father’s words. 30 But to summarize, he saw other crowds coming forward. People came, grasped the end of the iron railing, and moved forward, continually holding firmly to the iron railing until they arrived, sat down, and ate some of the fruit from the tree. 31 He also saw other crowds of people moving toward that impressive and large building. 32 And many drowned in the deep river, and many disappeared from his view, wandering on unfamiliar roads. 33 A large number of people entered the large building. After they entered the building, they pointed at and made fun of me, and those who were also eating the fruit, but we didn’t pay attention to them. 34 My father said the following: All those who paid attention to the insults fell away. 35 And my father said that Laman and Lemuel didn’t eat any of the fruit.

Paragraph 13

13

36 And it came to pass after my father had spoken all the words of his dream or vision, which were many, he said unto us, because of these things which he saw in a vision, he exceedingly feared for Laman and Lemuel; yea, he feared lest they should be cast off from the presence of the Lord. 37 And he did exhort them then with all the feeling of a tender parent that they would hearken to his words, in that perhaps the Lord would be merciful to them and not cast them off; yea, my father did preach unto them. 38 And after he had preached unto them, and also prophesied unto them of many things, he bade them to keep the commandments of the Lord; and he did cease speaking unto them. 9 And all these things did my father see, and hear, and speak as he dwelt in a tent in the valley of Lemuel, and also a great many more things which cannot be written upon these plates.

Paragraph 13

13

36 After my father had recounted everything about his dream or vision — and there was a lot covered — he told us that because of what he had seen in the vision, he was very afraid for Laman and Lemuel; afraid they would be shut out from the Lord’s presence. 37 He then urged them with all the feeling of a loving parent to listen to his words, because then the Lord might be merciful to them and not reject them. My father sincerely preached to them. 38 After he had preached and prophesied to them about many things, he pleaded with them to keep the Lord’s commandments. Then he finished speaking to them. 9 My father saw, heard, and said all these things as he occupied a tent in the valley of Lemuel, and much more that can’t be written on these plates.

Paragraph 14

14

2 And now as I have spoken concerning these plates, behold, they are not the plates upon which I make a full account of the history of my people; for the plates upon which I make a full account of my people I have given the name of Nephi; wherefore, they are called the plates of Nephi, after mine own name. And these plates also are called the plates of Nephi. 3 Nevertheless, I have received a commandment of the Lord that I should make these plates for the special purpose that there should be an account engraven of the ministry of my people. 4 And upon the other plates should be engraven an account of the reigns of the kings, and the wars and contentions of my people. Wherefore, these plates are for the more part of the ministry, and the other plates are for the more part of the reigns of the kings, and the wars and contentions of my people. 5 Wherefore, the Lord hath commanded me to make these plates for a wise purpose in him, which purpose I know not. 6 But the Lord knoweth all things from the beginning; wherefore, he prepareth a way to accomplish all his works among the children of men. For behold, he hath all power unto the fulfilling of all his words. And thus it is. Amen.

Paragraph 14

14

Since I’ve mentioned these plates, these aren’t the ones on which I’m making a complete account of my people’s history. The plates set aside for that purpose I’ve given the name of Nephi; so they’re called the plates of Nephi after my own name. Well, these plates are also called the plates of Nephi. Understand, the Lord commanded me to make these plates for the specific purpose of making a written account of my people’s ministry. On the other plates there’s a written account of the kings’ rule and my people’s wars and in-fighting. So these plates focus on telling you about our ministry, and the other plates focus on the kings’ rule and my people’s wars and arguments. I trust the Lord commanded me to make these plates for His wise purposes, but I can’t tell you His reasons. You see, the Lord knows all things from the beginning. Therefore He prepares in advance any needed response to accomplish all His plans for mankind, to fulfill all His words. That’s exactly how He works. Amen.
