Book of Mormon
Covenant of Christ
Paragraph 1
1
15 And it came to pass that after I, Nephi, had been carried away in the spirit and seen all these things, I returned to the tent of my father. 2 And it came to pass that I beheld my brethren, and they were disputing one with another concerning the things which my father had spoken unto them; 3 for he truly spake many great things unto them which were hard to be understood save a man should inquire of the Lord. And they being hard in their hearts, therefore they did not look unto the Lord as they ought. 4 And now I, Nephi, was grieved because of the hardness of their hearts, and also because of the things which I had seen, and knew they must unavoidably come to pass because of the great wickedness of the children of men. 5 And it came to pass that I was overcome because of my afflictions, for I considered that mine afflictions were great above all because of the destructions of my people, for I had beheld their fall.
Paragraph 1
1
15 After I had been carried away in the Spirit and seen all these things, I returned to my father’s tent. 2 I saw my brothers, and they were arguing with each other about what my father told them. 3 He had told them many great things that were hard to understand unless a person asked the Lord. Because they were hard-hearted, they didn’t look to the Lord as they should have. 4 I was troubled because of their stubbornness and because of the things I had seen, and I knew that it was inevitable that the things would happen because of the great wickedness of mankind. 5 Since I had seen their fall, I was overwhelmed by my troubles, thinking my sorrow was more than anyone else because of the destruction of my people.
Paragraph 2
2
6 And it came to pass that after I had received strength, I spake unto my brethren, desiring to know of them the cause of their disputations. 7 And they said, Behold, we cannot understand the words which our father hath spoken concerning the natural branches of the olive tree, and also concerning the gentiles. 8 And I said unto them, Have ye inquired of the Lord? 9 And they said unto me, We have not, for the Lord maketh no such thing known unto us. 10 Behold, I said unto them, How is it that ye do not keep the commandments of the Lord? How is it that ye will perish because of the hardness of your hearts? 11 Do ye not remember the thing which the Lord hath said, If ye will not harden your hearts, and ask me in faith, believing that ye shall receive, with diligence in keeping my commandments, surely these things shall be made known unto you?
Paragraph 2
2
6 After my strength had returned, I talked to my brothers, asking to know why they argued. 7 They said: We can’t understand what our father has said about the olive tree’s natural branches and about the Gentiles. 8 I said to them: Have you asked the Lord? 9 They replied: We haven’t — the Lord doesn’t reveal any such thing to us. 10 Then I asked them: Why don’t you keep the Lord’s commandments? Why are you determined to damn yourselves because of the hardness of your hearts? 11 Don’t you remember what the Lord has said? — if you choose not to harden your hearts and ask Me in faith, believing you will receive, consistently keeping My commandments, these things will certainly be revealed to you.
Paragraph 3
3
12 Behold, I say unto you that the house of Israel was compared unto an olive tree by the spirit of the Lord which was in our father. And behold, are we not broken off from the house of Israel? And are we not a branch of the house of Israel? 13 And now the thing which our father meaneth concerning the grafting in of the natural branches through the fullness of the gentiles is that in the latter days, when our seed shall have dwindled in unbelief — yea, for the space of many years and many generations after the Messiah shall be manifested in body unto the children of men — then shall the fullness of the gospel of the Messiah come unto the gentiles, and from the gentiles unto the remnant of our seed. 14 And at that day shall the remnant of our seed know that they are of the house of Israel and that they are the covenant people of the Lord. And then shall they know and come to the knowledge of their forefathers, and also to the knowledge of the gospel of their Redeemer, which was ministered unto their fathers by him. Wherefore, they shall come to the knowledge of their Redeemer and the very points of his doctrine, that they may know how to come unto him and be saved. 15 And then at that day, will they not rejoice and give praise unto their everlasting God, their rock, and their salvation? Yea, at that day, will they not receive strength and nourishment from the true vine? Yea, will they not come unto the true fold of God? 16 Behold, I say unto you, yea, they shall be numbered again among the house of Israel; they shall be grafted in, being a natural branch of the olive tree, into the true olive tree; 17 and this is what our father meaneth. And he meaneth that it will not come to pass until after they are scattered by the gentiles. And he meaneth that it shall come by way of the gentiles, that the Lord may shew his power unto the gentiles for the very cause that he shall be rejected of the Jews, or of the house of Israel. 18 Wherefore, our father hath not spoken of our seed alone, but also of all the house of Israel, pointing to the covenant which should be fulfilled in the latter days, which covenant the Lord made to our father Abraham, saying, In thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.
Paragraph 3
3
12 Now, I tell you that the Spirit of the Lord within our father compared the house of Israel to an olive tree. Are we not broken off from the house of Israel? Are we not a branch of the house of Israel? 13 The thing our father means about the natural branches being grafted in through the fullness of the Gentiles is that in the last days, when our descendants have fallen away in unbelief for many years over generations, and after the Messiah will have appeared in person to mankind, then the fullness of the gospel of the Messiah will come to the Gentiles, and from the Gentiles it will go to our descendants. 14 At that time, they’ll learn that they’re from the house of Israel and are the Lord’s covenant people. Then our descendants will learn about their forefathers and learn about the gospel of their Redeemer, which He taught their ancestors. So they’ll come to know about their Redeemer and the correct details of His doctrine, so they can know how to come to Him and be saved. 15 At that time, won’t they be glad and give praise to their everlasting God, their rock and their salvation? Won’t they receive strength and nourishment from the true vine at that day? Won’t they come to God’s true fold? 16 Yes. They’ll be included with the house of Israel again; they’ll be grafted into the true olive tree, being a natural branch of it. 17 This is what our father means. He also means that it won’t happen until they’ve been scattered by the Gentiles. And he means that it will come through the Gentiles, so the Lord can show His power to the Gentiles, specifically because He’ll be rejected by the Jews or by the house of Israel. 18 Therefore our father hasn’t just spoken about our descendants, but also about all the house of Israel, pointing to the covenant to be fulfilled in the last days; the covenant the Lord made with our father Abraham, having said to him, All the families of the earth will be blessed through your descendants.
Paragraph 4
4
19 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, spake much unto them concerning these things; yea, I spake unto them concerning the restoration of the Jews in the latter days. 20 And I did rehearse unto them the words of Isaiah, who spake concerning the restoration of the Jews, or of the house of Israel; and after they were restored, they should no more be confounded, neither should they be scattered again. And it came to pass that I did speak so many words unto my brethren that they were pacified and did humble themselves before the Lord.
Paragraph 4
4
19 I spoke to them extensively about these things and about the restoration of the Jews in the last days. 20 I recounted Isaiah’s words to them, which told of the restoration of the Jews or the house of Israel — that after being restored they weren’t to be lost anymore or scattered again. I told my brothers so many things that they were satisfied, persuaded, and humbled themselves before the Lord.
Paragraph 5
5
21 And it came to pass that they did speak unto me again, saying, What meaneth this thing which our father saw in a dream? What meaneth the tree which he saw? 22 And I said unto them, It was a representation of the tree of life. 23 And they said unto me, What meaneth the rod of iron which our father saw that led to the tree? 24 And I said unto them that it was the word of God, and that whoso would hearken unto the word of God and would hold fast unto it, they would never perish, neither could the temptations and the fiery darts of the adversary overpower them unto blindness, to lead them away to destruction. 25 Wherefore, I, Nephi, did exhort them to give heed unto the word of the Lord; yea, I did exhort them with all the energies of my soul, and with all the faculty which I possessed, that they would give heed to the word of God and remember to keep his commandments always, in all things. 26 And they said unto me, What meaneth the river of water which our father saw? 27 And I said unto them that the water which my father saw was filthiness; and so much was his mind swallowed up in other things that he beheld not the filthiness of the water. 28 And I said unto them that it was an awful gulf which separateth the wicked from the tree of life, and also from the saints of God. 29 And I said unto them that it was a representation of that awful hell which the angel said unto me was prepared for the wicked. 30 And I said unto them that our father also saw that the justice of God did also divide the wicked from the righteous, and the brightness thereof was like unto the brightness of a flaming fire which ascendeth up unto God for ever and ever and hath no end.
Paragraph 5
5
21 Then they spoke to me again, asking: What do these things mean, which our father saw in a dream? What’s the meaning of the tree that he saw? 22 I replied: It represented the tree of life. 23 Then they asked me: What’s the meaning of the iron railing that our father saw leading to the tree? 24 I told them it was the word of God and that those who were willing to obey and hold firmly to the word of God would never perish, nor would the adversary’s temptations and fiery darts be able to overpower them so as to blind them and lead them away to destruction. 25 Therefore I urged them to pay careful attention to the Lord’s word. Indeed, I urged them — with all the energy of my soul and all my ability — to pay careful attention to the word of God and to always remember to keep His commandments in all things. 26 Then they asked me: What did the river that our father saw mean? 27 I told them the water our father saw was filthiness, but that his mind was so occupied with other things he didn’t notice the water was filthy. 28 I told them it was a terrible divide that separated the wicked from the tree of life and from the holy ones of God. 29 I said to them it represented the awful hell the angel told me was prepared for the wicked. 30 I then told them our father also saw that God’s justice also divided the wicked from the righteous, and its glare was like a blinding fire ascending to God from eternity to eternity that never ends.
Paragraph 6
6
31 And they said unto me, Doth this thing mean the torment of the body in the days of probation? Or doth it mean the final state of the soul after the death of the temporal body? Or doth it speak of the things which are temporal? 32 And it came to pass that I said unto them that it was a representation of things both temporal and spiritual; for the day should come that they must be judged of their works, yea, even the works which were done by the temporal body in their days of probation. 33 Wherefore, if they should die in their wickedness, they must be cast off also as to the things which are spiritual, which are pertaining unto righteousness. Wherefore, they must be brought to stand before God to be judged of their works. And if their works have been filthiness, they must needs be filthy; and if they be filthy, it must needs be that they cannot dwell in the kingdom of God — if so, the kingdom of God must be filthy also. 34 But behold, I say unto you that the kingdom of God is not filthy, that there cannot any unclean thing enter into the kingdom of God; wherefore, there must needs be a place of filthiness prepared for that which is filthy. 35 And there is a place prepared, yea, even that awful hell of which I have spoken, and the Devil is the foundation of it. Wherefore, the final state of the souls of man is to dwell in the kingdom of God or to be cast out because of that justice of which I have spoken. 36 Wherefore, the wicked are separated from the righteous, and also from that tree of life whose fruit is most precious and most desirable of all other fruits; yea, and it is the greatest of all the gifts of God. And thus I spake unto my brethren. Amen.
Paragraph 6
6
31 They also asked me: Does this mean the body’s torment in the days of mortality, or does it mean the spirit’s final state following the death of the earthly body, or does it speak of physical things? 32 I told them it represented both physical and spiritual things; that the time would come when they would be judged for what they did, for the things they did while on earth during their days of mortal life. 33 Therefore if they were to die in their wickedness, they would have to be outcast from spiritual things involving righteousness. They would certainly be brought to stand before God to be judged for what they did, and if the things they did involved filthy thoughts and behavior, they’ll certainly be filthy. And if they’re filthy, it’s impossible for them to live in God’s kingdom; if they did, God’s kingdom would have to be filthy as well. 34 But I tell you God’s kingdom isn’t filthy, and no unclean thing can enter God’s kingdom. So there has to be a place of filthiness prepared for the filthy. 35 There is such a place prepared — that awful hell I’ve spoken about — and the accuser is at the foundation of it. So the final state of a person’s soul is to live in God’s kingdom or to be thrown out because of the justice I’ve explained to you. 36 So the wicked are separated from the righteous and from the tree of life, whose fruit is the most valuable and desirable of any fruit and the greatest of all God’s gifts. This is how I spoke to my brothers. Amen.
