Book of Mormon
Covenant of Christ
Paragraph 1
1
But if they will repent, and hearken unto my words, and harden not their hearts, I will establish my church among them, and they shall come in unto the covenant and be numbered among this the remnant of Jacob, unto whom I have given this land for their inheritance. 23 And they shall assist my people, the remnant of Jacob, and also as many of the house of Israel as shall come, that they may build a city which shall be called the New Jerusalem. 24 And then shall they assist my people, that they may be gathered in, who are scattered upon all the face of the land, in unto the New Jerusalem. 25 And then shall the Powers of Heaven come down among them, and I also will be in the midst. 26 And then shall the work of the Father commence at that day, even when this gospel shall be preached among the remnant of this people. Verily I say unto you, at that day shall the work of the Father commence among all the dispersed of my people, yea, even the tribes which have been lost, which the Father hath led away out of Jerusalem. 27 Yea, the work shall commence among all the dispersed of my people, with the Father to prepare the way whereby they may come unto me, that they may call on the Father in my name. 28 Yea, and then shall the work commence with the Father among all nations, in preparing the way whereby his people may be gathered home to the land of their inheritance. 29 And they shall go out from all nations, and they shall not go out in haste nor go by flight, for I will go before them, saith the Father, and I will be their rearward.
Paragraph 1
1
But if the Gentiles repent and hearken to My words and don’t harden their hearts, I’ll establish My congregation among them. And they will enter the covenant and be included with the remnant of Jacob, to whom I’ve given this land as their inheritance. 23 They will join with My people, the remnant of Jacob, and all those of the house of Israel who come, so they can build a city that will be called the New Jerusalem. 24 Then they will join with My people who are scattered throughout the land so they can be brought in together to the New Jerusalem. 25 Then the Powers of heaven will come down among them, and I will be with them as well. 26 Then the Father’s work will be underway, when this gospel is preached among the remnant of this people. Truly I say to you: At that time, the Father’s work will be taught among the scattered portion of My people, even the tribes that have been lost, whom the Father led away out of Jerusalem. 27 The Father will work with My scattered people, to enable them to come to Me, so they can call on the Father in My name. 28 Truly the work of the Father will be underway in all nations, clearing the way to let His people be gathered home to the land of their inheritance. 29 They will go out from all nations. And they won’t go hastily or at a run, because I will go in front of them, says the Father, and I will guard them from behind.
Paragraph 2
2
22 And then shall that which is written come to pass: Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child; for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the Lord. 2 Enlarge the place of thy tent and let them stretch forth the curtains of thy habitations; spare not, lengthen thy cords and strengthen thy stakes, 3 for thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left, and thy seed shall inherit the gentiles and make the desolate cities to be inhabited. 4 Fear not, for thou shalt not be ashamed, neither be thou confounded, for thou shalt not be put to shame; for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood anymore. 5 For thy Maker, thy husband, the Lord of Hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, the God of the whole earth shall he be called. 6 For the Lord hath called thee as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth when thou wast refused, saith thy God. 7 For a small moment have I forsaken thee, but with great mercies will I gather thee. 8 In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment, but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer. 9 For this, the waters of Noah unto me, for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee. 10 For the mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee.
Paragraph 2
2
22 Then what’s written will happen: Sing, O barren, you who never gave birth; break into song and cry aloud, you who never struggled in labor to give birth; for there will be more children of the barren than children of the married wife, says the Lord. 2 You’ll need a bigger tent, let your communities spread out; keep growing, get longer tent cords and stronger poles, 3 for you’ll gather from the south and the north, and your posterity will adopt the Gentiles and fill the desolated cities again. 4 Don’t be afraid, for you’ll never be embarrassed or confused, nor ashamed; for you’ll forget your youthful shame and won’t remember mourning as a widow anymore. 5 For your Creator, your Husband, His name is the Lord of Hosts; and your Redeemer will be called the Holy One of Israel, the God of the whole earth. 6 For the Lord has invited you as an abandoned and forlorn woman, and a wife who married young and now abandoned, explains the Lord. 7 It was only a momentary departure by Me, but now with kindness and forgiveness I embrace you again. 8 I was only upset and left you for a moment, but My affection and loyalty to you will never end, declares the Lord your Redeemer. 9 It’s like when I promised the flood of Noah will never be repeated, I likewise promise I will never abandon you again. 10 Although the mountains will erode away, and the hills disappear, My protection and care for you will never end, nor will My covenant of peace be revoked, for I your Lord have mercy on you.
Paragraph 3
3
11 O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colors and lay thy foundations with sapphires. 12 And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones. 13 And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord, and great shall be the peace of thy children. 14 In righteousness shalt thou be established; thou shalt be far from oppression, for thou shalt not fear, and from terror, for it shall not come near thee. 15 Behold, they shall surely gather together against thee, not by me; whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake. 16 Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work, and I have created the waster to destroy. 17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper, and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.
Paragraph 3
3
11 O you afflicted, storm-tossed, and suffering one, know that I will provide a foundation as sturdy as rock and beautiful as sapphire. 12 I’ll make your towers more valuable than rubies, doors that are precious, surrounded by heavenly designs upon the walls. 13 All your children will be taught about the Lord, and your children will learn and understand. 14 I’ll govern you righteously; you won’t be oppressed, live in fear, or feel threatened, for none of that will return to you. 15 If anyone were to dare attack you it will offend Me, and they’ll be defeated before your eyes. 16 I provided the blacksmith that fans the coals to forge the weapons, and I have control over invading armies. 17 No weapon turned against you will succeed, and every accusation against you will be disproven, for My servants will be vindicated. This is the heritage of My servants, and their defense comes from Me, says the Lord.
Paragraph 4
4
23 And now behold, I say unto you that ye had ought to search these things. Yea, a commandment I give unto you that ye search these things diligently, for great are the words of Isaiah. 2 For surely he spake as touching all things concerning my people which are of the house of Israel. Therefore, it must needs be that he must speak also to the gentiles. 3 And all things that he spake hath been and shall be, even according to the words which he spake. 4 Therefore, give heed to my words. Write the things which I have told you, and, according to the time and the will of the Father, they shall go forth unto the gentiles. 5 And whosoever will hearken unto my words, and repenteth and is baptized, the same shall be saved. Search the prophets, for many there be that testify of these things.
Paragraph 4
4
23 Now I tell you that you ought to carefully study these things. In fact, I give you a commandment to study these things diligently, because Isaiah’s prophecies are critical. 2 He clearly focused his prophecy on My people who are part of the house of Israel. Therefore he necessarily prophesied about the Gentiles. 3 And everything he prophesied has happened, or will happen, precisely as he foretold. 4 Therefore pay careful attention to My words. Write down the things I’ve told you. At the time decided by the Father, they will be provided to the Gentiles. 5 And anyone who obeys My words, repents, and is baptized, will be saved. Carefully study the teachings of the prophets, because many of them explain these things.
Paragraph 5
5
6 And now it came to pass that when Jesus had said these words, he said unto them again, after he had expounded all the scriptures unto them which they had received, he said unto them, Behold, other scriptures I would that ye should write, that ye have not. 7 And it came to pass that he said unto Nephi, Bring forth the record which ye have kept. 8 And when Nephi had brought forth the records and laid them before him, and he cast his eyes upon them and said, 9 Verily I say unto you, I commanded my servant Samuel, the Lamanite, that he should testify unto this people that at the day that the Father should glorify his name in me, that there were many saints who should arise from the dead, and should appear unto many, and should minister unto them. And he said unto them, Were it not so? 10 And his disciples answered him and said, Yea, Lord, Samuel did prophesy according to thy words, and they were all fulfilled. 11 And Jesus said unto them, How be it that ye have not written this thing, that many saints did arise and appear unto many and did minister unto them? 12 And it came to pass that Nephi remembered that this thing had not been written. 13 And it came to pass that Jesus commanded that it should be written, therefore it was written according as he commanded.
Paragraph 5
5
6 After Jesus said this, He explained the scriptures to them and told them: There are other scriptures I want you to write that you don’t have. 7 He asked Nephi: Bring out the records you’ve kept. 8 Then Nephi brought out the records and put them in front of Him; He glanced at them and said: 9 The truth is that I commanded My servant, Samuel the Lamanite, to tell this people that at the time the Father glorified His name in Me, there would be many holy ones who would rise from the dead and appear to many and minister to them. He asked them: Wasn’t this the case? 10 His disciples answered: Yes, Lord, Samuel prophesied as you’ve said, and everything happened accordingly. 11 Jesus asked them: Then why haven’t you written it down — that many holy ones rose from the dead and appeared to many and ministered to them? 12 And Nephi remembered this wasn’t written down. 13 And Jesus commanded it to be added and this was written as He commanded.
