Covenant of Christ

Paragraph 1

1

8 And now it came to pass that according to our record — and we know our record to be true, for behold, it was a just man who did keep the record, for he truly did many miracles in the name of Jesus, and there was not any man who could do a miracle in the name of Jesus save he were cleansed every whit from his iniquity — 2 and now it came to pass, if there was no mistake made by this man in the reckoning of our time, the thirty and third year had passed away. 3 And the people began to look with great earnestness for the sign which had been given by the prophet Samuel, the Lamanite, yea, for the time that there should be darkness for the space of three days over the face of the land. 4 And there began to be great doubtings and disputations among the people, notwithstanding so many signs had been given.

Paragraph 1

1

8 According to our record, which we know is true because it was kept by a righteous man — he really performed many miracles in Jesus’ name, and no one could perform a miracle in His name unless they were completely cleansed of their iniquity — now if this man didn’t make a mistake in calculating our time, the 33rd year came to an end. The people began to anxiously watch for the sign given by the prophet Samuel the Lamanite, meaning the time when darkness would cover the land for three days. There was a lot of uncertainty and arguments among the people, despite the fact so many signs had already been given.

Paragraph 2

2

5 And it came to pass in the thirty and fourth year, in the first month, in the fourteenth day of the month, there arose a great storm, such an one as never had been known in all the land; 6 and there was also a great and terrible tempest; and there was terrible thunder; insomuch that it did shake the whole earth as if it was about to divide asunder. 7 And there were exceeding sharp lightnings, such as never had been known in all the land. 8 And the city of Zarahemla did take fire; 9 and the city of Moroni did sink into the depths of the sea and the inhabitants thereof were drowned. 10 And the earth was carried up upon the city of Moronihah, that in the place of the city thereof, there became a great mountain. 11 And there was a great and terrible destruction in the land southward. 12 But behold, there was a more great and terrible destruction in the land northward; for behold, the whole face of the land was changed because of the tempests, and the whirlwinds, and the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the exceeding great quaking of the whole earth. 13 And the highways were broken up, and the level roads were spoiled, and many smooth places became rough. 14 And many great and notable cities were sunk, and many were burned, and many were shook till the buildings thereof had fallen to the earth and the inhabitants thereof were slain, and the places were left desolate. 15 And there were some cities which remained, but the damage thereof was exceeding great, and there were many in them who were slain. 16 And there were some who were carried away in the whirlwind, and whither they went, no man knoweth, save they know that they were carried away. 17 And thus the face of the whole earth became deformed because of the tempests, and the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the quaking of the earth. 18 And behold, the rocks were rent in twain, yea, they were broken up upon the face of the whole earth, insomuch that they were found in broken fragments, and in seams, and in cracks, upon all the face of the land.

Paragraph 2

2

In the 34th year, on the 14th day of the first month, a great storm arose, the kind of storm that had never been experienced before in that land. There were great and terrible winds; and terrible thunder, so much so that it shook the whole earth as if it were about to split apart. There was very sharp lightning, the kind of lightning never before experienced in that land. The city of Zarahemla caught fire. The city of Moroni sank into the depths of the sea and its inhabitants drowned. 10 And earth overwhelmed the city of Moronihah, so that a great mountain rose up in its place. 11 There was great and terrible destruction in the land to the south. 12 But the destruction was greater and more terrible in the land to the north since the whole surface of the land was changed because of the storms, tornadoes, thunder, lightning, and very strong earthquakes. 13 Highways were broken up, level roads were damaged, and many flat areas became uneven. 14 Many prominent cities were sunk, many were burned, and many were shaken until their buildings had fallen to the ground and their inhabitants were killed and they were left empty. 15 Some cities remained, but they were heavily damaged, and many of the occupants were killed. 16 Some were taken away by tornadoes; and no one knows where they went, except they know they were removed. 17 So the surface of the whole land was deformed because of the storms, thunder, lightning, and earthquakes. 18 The solid ground was split apart — indeed, the land was broken up all over, being left in broken fragments, grooves, and cracks everywhere.

Paragraph 3

3

19 And it came to pass that when the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the storm, and the tempest, and the quakings of the earth did cease — for behold, they did last for about the space of three hours; and it was said by some that the time was greater, nevertheless, all these great and terrible things were done in about the space of three hours — and then, behold, there was darkness upon the face of the land.

Paragraph 3

3

19 When the thunder, lightning, storms, violent wind, and earthquakes stopped after approximately three hours, although some said it lasted much longer, nevertheless all these great and terrible things happened over the course of about three hours and then darkness covered the land.

Paragraph 4

4

20 And it came to pass that there was thick darkness upon the face of all the land, insomuch that the inhabitants thereof who had not fallen could feel the vapor of darkness. 21 And there could be no light because of the darkness, neither candles, neither torches, neither could there be fire kindled with their fine and exceeding dry wood, so that there could not be any light at all. 22 And there was not any light seen, neither fire, nor glimmer, neither the sun, nor the moon, nor the stars, for so great were the mists of darkness which were upon the face of the land.

Paragraph 4

4

20 Thick darkness covered the whole land, so that those who survived could feel the vapor of darkness. 21 That dark vapor prevented any light, even from candles or torches. And fires couldn’t be lit either, not even with their best and very dry wood, so there wasn’t any light at all. 22 So no light was seen, not a fire or a spark, nor the sun, moon, or stars, as thick mists of darkness covered the land.

Paragraph 5

5

23 And it came to pass that it did last for the space of three days that there was no light seen; and there was great mourning, and howling, and weeping among all the people continually, yea, great were the groanings of the people because of the darkness and the great destruction which had come upon them. 24 And in one place they were heard to cry, saying, Oh that we had repented before this great and terrible day, and then would our brethren have been spared, and they would not have been burned in that great city Zarahemla. 25 And in another place they were heard to cry and mourn, saying, Oh that we had repented before this great and terrible day and had not killed and stoned the prophets and cast them out, then would our mothers, and our fair daughters, and our children have been spared and not have been buried up in that great city Moronihah. And thus were the howlings of the people great and terrible.

Paragraph 5

5

23 No light was seen for three days. There was continuous, intense mourning, howling, and weeping by the people; indeed, their deep cries of anguish echoed loudly, because of the darkness and devastation that had befallen them. 24 In one place they were heard crying out: Why didn’t we repent before this great and terrible day! If we had repented, then our people would have been spared and they wouldn’t have been burned in that great city of Zarahemla! 25 In another place they were heard crying out and mourning: Why didn’t we repent before this great and terrible day! Why did we kill and stone the prophets and drive them away! If we hadn’t done this, then our mothers and beautiful daughters and children would have been spared and wouldn’t have been buried in that great city of Moronihah. And so they lamented loudly.

Paragraph 6

6

9 And it came to pass that there was a voice heard among all the inhabitants of the earth upon all the face of this land, crying, 2 Woe, woe, woe unto this people. Woe unto the inhabitants of the whole earth except they shall repent, for the Devil laugheth and his angels rejoice because of the slain of the fair sons and daughters of my people; and it is because of their iniquity and abominations that they are fallen. 3 Behold, that great city Zarahemla have I burned with fire, and the inhabitants thereof. 4 And behold, that great city Moroni have I caused to be sunk in the depths of the sea, and the inhabitants thereof to be drowned. 5 And behold, that great city Moronihah have I covered with earth, and the inhabitants thereof, to hide their iniquities and their abominations from before my face, that the blood of the prophets and the saints shall not come up anymore unto me against them. 6 And behold, the city of Gilgal have I caused to be sunk, and the inhabitants thereof, to be buried up in the depths of the earth; 7 yea, and the city Onihah and the inhabitants thereof, and the city of Mocum and the inhabitants thereof, and the city of Jerusalem and the inhabitants thereof. And waters have I caused to come up in the stead thereof, to hide their wickedness and abominations from before my face, that the blood of the prophets and the saints shall not come up anymore unto me against them. 8 And behold, the city of Gadiandi, and the city of Gadiomnah, and the city of Jacob, and the city Gimgimno — all these have I caused to be sunk, and made hills and valleys in the places thereof; and the inhabitants thereof have I buried up in the depths of the earth, to hide their wickedness and abominations from before my face, that the blood of the prophets and the saints should not come up anymore unto me against them. 9 And behold, that great city Jacob-ugath, which was inhabited by the people of king Jacob, have I caused to be burned with fire because of their sins and their wickedness, which was above all the wickedness of the whole earth because of their secret murders and combinations, for it was they that did destroy the peace of my people and the government of the land. Therefore, I did cause them to be burned to destroy them from before my face, that the blood of the prophets and the saints should not come up unto me anymore against them. 10 And behold, the city of Laman, and the city of Josh, and the city of Gad, and the city of Kishcumen have I caused to be burned with fire, and the inhabitants thereof, because of their wickedness in casting out the prophets and stoning them whom I did send to declare unto them concerning their wickedness and their abominations. 11 And because they did cast them all out, that there were none righteous among them, I did send down fire and destroy them, that their wickedness and abominations might be hid from before my face, that the blood of the prophets and the saints whom I sent among them might not cry unto me from the ground against them. 12 And many great destructions have I caused to come upon this land and upon this people because of their wickedness and their abominations.

Paragraph 6

6

9 Then a voice was heard among all the inhabitants of the land, crying out: Woe, woe, woe to this people! Woe to the inhabitants of the whole earth unless they repent. The accuser is laughing and his angels are rejoicing because of the beautiful sons and daughters of My people who have been killed. It’s because of their iniquity and their abominations that they’ve fallen. I’ve burned that great city of Zarahemla, along with its inhabitants. I’ve caused that great city of Moroni to be sunk in the depths of the sea and its inhabitants to be drowned. I’ve covered that great city of Moronihah with earth, along with its inhabitants, to hide their iniquities and abominations from My sight, so the blood of the prophets and holy ones won’t protest to Me against them anymore. I’ve caused the city of Gilgal to be sunk and its inhabitants to be buried deep in the earth — and the city of Onihah and its inhabitants, and the city of Mocum and its inhabitants, and the city of Jerusalem and its inhabitants; and I’ve caused water to come up in their place, to hide their wickedness and abominations from My sight, so the blood of the prophets and holy ones won’t protest to Me against them anymore. And the city of Gadiandi, the city of Gadiomnah, the city of Jacob, and the city of Gimgimno — I’ve caused all these cities to be sunk and have made hills and valleys where they used to be. And I’ve buried their inhabitants deep in the earth, to hide their wickedness and abominations from My sight, so the blood of the prophets and holy ones won’t protest to Me against them anymore. That great city Jacob-Ugath, which was inhabited by king Jacob’s people, I’ve caused to be burned with fire because of their sins and wickedness, which was above all the wickedness of the whole earth because of their secret murders and conspiracies: they were the ones who destroyed the peace of My people and the government of the land. Therefore I caused them to be burned, to remove them from My sight, so the blood of the prophets and holy ones wouldn’t protest to Me against them anymore. 10 I’ve caused the city of Laman, the city of Josh, the city of Gad, and the city of Kishcumen to be burned with fire, along with their inhabitants, because of their wickedness in driving out the prophets and stoning those whom I sent to declare to them regarding their wickedness and abominations. 11 Because they drove them all out, so there weren’t any righteous people remaining, I sent down fire and destroyed them, so their wickedness and abominations would be hidden from My sight, so the blood of the prophets and holy ones I sent among them wouldn’t cry to Me from the ground against them. 12 All this devastation of this land and its people has been necessary because of their wickedness and abominations.

Paragraph 7

7

13 O all ye that are spared because ye were more righteous than they, will ye not now return unto me, and repent of your sins, and be converted, that I may heal you? 14 Yea, verily I say unto you, if ye will come unto me, ye shall have eternal life. Behold, mine arm of mercy is extended towards you, and whosoever will come, him will I receive; and blessed are those who come unto me. 15 Behold, I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I created the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are. I was with the Father from the beginning. I am in the Father and the Father in me, and in me hath the Father glorified his name. 16 I came unto my own and my own received me not. And the scriptures concerning my coming are fulfilled. 17 And as many as have received me, to them have I given to become the sons of God; and even so will I to as many as shall believe on my name. For behold, by me redemption cometh, and in me is the law of Moses fulfilled. 18 I am the light and the life of the world. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. 19 And ye shall offer up unto me no more the shedding of blood, yea, your sacrifices and your burnt offerings shall be done away, for I will accept none of your sacrifices and your burnt offerings; 20 and ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I baptize with fire and with the holy ghost, even as the Lamanites, because of their faith in me at the time of their conversion, were baptized with fire and with the holy ghost and they knew it not. 21 Behold, I have come unto the world to bring redemption unto the world, to save the world from sin. 22 Therefore, whoso repenteth and cometh unto me as a little child, him will I receive, for of such is the kingdom of God. Behold, for such I have laid down my life and have taken it up again; therefore, repent and come unto me ye ends of the earth and be saved.

Paragraph 7

7

13 All you that have been spared because you were more righteous than they were, will you return to Me now and repent of your sins and be converted, so I can heal you? 14 I promise you: If you come to Me, you will have eternal life. My arm of mercy is reaching for you. Anyone who comes to Me, I’ll receive them; those who come to Me will be blessed. 15 I Am Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I created the heavens, the earth, and everything that’s in them. I was with the Father since the beginning. I Am in the Father and the Father in Me; and the Father has glorified His name in Me. 16 I came to My own, and My own rejected Me; and the scriptures promising My coming are fulfilled. 17 I’ve given power to all those who have received Me, to become sons and daughters of God. Likewise, I’ll give power to all those who believe in My name. Because redemption comes through Me, and the Law of Moses has been concluded by Me. 18 I Am the light and the life of the world. I Am first and last, the beginning and the end. 19 You must no longer shed blood as an offering to Me; indeed, your sacrifices and burnt offerings must end now, because I’ll no longer accept any of your sacrifices or burnt offerings. 20 You must offer Me a broken heart and a contrite spirit as a sacrifice. Whoever comes to Me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, I’ll baptize them with fire and the Holy Ghost, just like the Lamanites were baptized with fire and the Holy Ghost because of their faith in Me at the time of their conversion, and yet they didn’t understand what it was. 21 I’ve come into the world to bring redemption to the world, to save the world from sin. 22 Therefore whoever repents and comes to Me as a little child, I will receive them, because God’s kingdom is made up of people like this. I’ve given My life for such people, and I’ve taken it up again. Therefore repent and come to Me, everyone throughout the world, and be saved.

Paragraph 8

8

10 And now behold, it came to pass that all the people of the land did hear these sayings and did witness of it. And after these sayings, there was silence in the land for the space of many hours, 2 for so great was the astonishment of the people that they did cease lamenting and howling for the loss of their kindreds which had been slain; therefore there was silence in all the land for the space of many hours.

Paragraph 8

8

10 Now all the people of the land heard these words and were witnesses of them. After these things were said, there was silence in the land for many hours. The silence was because the people’s astonishment was so great they stopped mourning and howling about losing their relatives. So there was silence throughout the land for many hours.

Paragraph 9

9

3 And it came to pass that there came a voice again unto the people, and all the people did hear and did witness of it, saying, 4 O ye people of these great cities which have fallen, who are descendants of Jacob, yea, who are of the house of Israel, O ye people of the house of Israel, how oft have I gathered you as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and have nourished you! 5 And again, how oft would I have gathered you as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, yea, O ye people of the house of Israel who have fallen! Yea, O ye people of the house of Israel, ye that dwell at Jerusalem as ye that have fallen, yea, how oft would I have gathered you as a hen gathereth her chickens, and ye would not! 6 O ye house of Israel whom I have spared, how oft will I gather you as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings if ye will repent and return unto me with full purpose of heart! 7 But if not, O house of Israel, the places of your dwellings shall become desolate until the time of the fulfilling of the covenant to your fathers.

Paragraph 9

9

Then a voice spoke again to the people, and everyone heard it and testified of it. The voice said: You people of these great cities that have fallen, who are descendants of Jacob, who belong to the house of Israel; you people of the house of Israel, how often I’ve gathered you as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings and how often I’ve guided you! Again, how often I’ve tried to gather you as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings! You people of the house of Israel who have fallen, O house of Israel who live at Jerusalem as well as you that have fallen: how often I would have gathered you as a hen gathers her chicks, but you refused! You people of the house of Israel whom I’ve spared, how often I will gather you as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, if you repent and return to Me with all your heart! But if not, O house of Israel, your dwelling places will become desolate until the time when the covenant to your fathers is kept.

Paragraph 10

10

8 And now it came to pass that after the people had heard these words, behold, they began to weep and howl again because of the loss of their kindred and friends. 9 And it came to pass that thus did the three days pass away. And it was in the morning and the darkness dispersed from off the face of the land, and the earth did cease to tremble, and the rocks did cease to rend, and the dreadful groanings did cease, and all the tumultuous noises did pass away, 10 and the earth did cleave together again that it stood, and the mourning and the weeping and the wailing of the people who were spared alive did cease. And their mourning was turned into joy, and their lamentations into the praise and the thanksgiving unto the Lord Jesus Christ, their Redeemer. 11 And thus far were the scriptures fulfilled which had been spoken by the prophets. 12 And it was the more righteous part of the people who were saved, and it was they who received the prophets and stoned them not, and it was they who had not shed the blood of the saints, who were spared. 13 And they were spared, and were not sunk and buried up in the earth, and they were not drowned in the depths of the sea, and they were not burned by fire, neither were they fallen upon and crushed to death; and they were not carried away in the whirlwind, neither were they overpowered by the vapor of smoke and of darkness.

Paragraph 10

10

After the people heard this, they again began to weep and howl because of lost relatives and friends, and for three days this continued. Then in the morning, the darkness dispersed from the land and the ground stabilized, stopped splitting, the terrible groaning stopped, and all the tumult of noises ended. 10 The ground held firmly together once more and stood still. The mourning, weeping, and wailing of the survivors stopped. Their mourning changed into joy and their lamentations changed into praise and thanksgiving to the Lord Jesus Christ their Redeemer. 11 At that point the scriptures spoken by the prophets were fulfilled. 12 It was the more righteous who were saved; they were the ones who received the prophets and didn’t stone them. Those who were spared were the ones who hadn’t killed the holy ones. 13 They were spared and weren’t sunk and buried deep in the ground, they weren’t drowned in the depths of the sea, they weren’t burned by fire, they weren’t fallen upon and crushed to death, they weren’t carried away in the tornadoes, and they weren’t overcome by the vapor of smoke and darkness.

Paragraph 11

11

14 And now whoso readeth, let him understand; he that hath the scriptures, let him search them, and see, and behold if all these deaths, and destructions by fire, and by smoke, and by tempests and by whirlwinds, and by the opening of the earth to receive them, and all these things are not unto the fulfilling of the prophecies of many of the holy prophets. 15 Behold, I say unto you, yea, many have testified of these things at the coming of Christ and were slain because they testified of these things — 16 yea, the prophet Zenos did testify of these things, and also Zenoch spake concerning these things, because they testified particular concerning us, who are the remnant of their seed. 17 Behold, our father Jacob also testified concerning a remnant of the seed of Joseph. And behold, are not we a remnant of the seed of Joseph? And these things which testify of us, are they not written upon the plates of brass which our father Lehi brought out of Jerusalem? 18 And it came to pass that in the ending of the thirty and fourth year, behold, I will shew unto you that the people of Nephi who were spared, and also those who had been called Lamanites who had been spared, did have great favors shewn unto them and great blessings poured out upon their heads, insomuch that soon after the ascension of Christ into Heaven, he did truly manifest himself unto them, 19 shewing his body unto them and ministering unto them; and an account of his ministry shall be given hereafter. Therefore, for this time, I make an end of my sayings.

Paragraph 11

11

14 Now whoever reads this, please understand; if you have the scriptures, please carefully study them and notice if all these deaths and this destruction by fire, smoke, storms, tornadoes, and the opening of the earth to bury them, whether all of it fulfills the prophecies of so many of the holy prophets. 15 I tell you: Many testified about these things at Christ’s coming and were killed because of their testimony about these things. 16 This includes the prophet Zenos, and Zenoch who both spoke about these things, and they testified specifically about us, who are a remnant of their descendants. 17 Our father Jacob also testified about a remnant of Joseph’s descendants. And aren’t we a remnant of Joseph’s descendants? These things that testify of us, aren’t they written on the brass plates our father Lehi brought from Jerusalem? 18 At the end of the 34th year, I’ll show you that the Nephites who were spared, as well as those who had been called Lamanites, were favored and greatly blessed, to such an extent that soon after Christ’s ascension into heaven He actually visited them, 19 showing His body to them and ministering to them. An account of His ministry will follow after this. Therefore I’m finishing my remarks for now.
