The commandments of Alma to his son Helaman.

Alma’s commandments to his son Helaman.

Paragraph 1

1

36 My son, give ear to my words, for I swear unto you that inasmuch as ye shall keep the commandments of God, ye shall prosper in the land. 2 I would that ye should do as I have done in remembering the captivity of our fathers; for they were in bondage and none could deliver them, except it were the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And he surely did deliver them in their afflictions. 3 And now, O my son Helaman, behold, thou art in thy youth, and therefore I beseech of thee that thou wilt hear my words and learn of me. For I do know that whosoever shall put their trust in God shall be supported in their trials, and their troubles, and their afflictions, and shall be lifted up at the last day. 4 And I would not that ye think that I know of myself — not of the temporal, but of the spiritual, not of the carnal mind, but of God.

Paragraph 1

1

36 My son, listen carefully. I promise you that to the extent you keep God’s commandments, you’ll prosper in the land. I want you to follow my example and always remember our ancestors’ captivity. Because when they were slaves no one could save them except for the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob — He certainly rescued them from their misery. Now Helaman my son, you are young, and I urge you to listen and learn what I tell you, because I’ve seen that anyone who puts their trust in God will have His assistance during their trials, troubles, and difficulties and will be saved on the last day. Don’t think I understand this just from what I’ve seen, because it isn’t the result of earthly experience alone but has been confirmed by the Spirit: not from the carnal mind but from God.

Paragraph 2

2

5 Now behold, I say unto you, if I had not been born of God, I should not have known these things. But God has, by the mouth of his holy angel, made these things known unto me — not of any worthiness of myself, 6 for I went about with the sons of Mosiah seeking to destroy the church of God; but behold, God sent his holy angel to stop us by the way. 7 And behold, he spake unto us as it were the voice of thunder, and the whole earth did tremble beneath our feet, and we all fell to the earth, for the fear of the Lord came upon us. 8 But behold, the voice said unto me, Arise. And I arose, and stood up and beheld the angel. 9 And he said unto me, If thou wilt of thyself, be destroyed; seek no more to destroy the church of God.

Paragraph 2

2

Now I tell you: If I hadn’t been born of God, I wouldn’t have understood these things. Remember God revealed them to me by His holy angel, and not because I had done anything to be worthy of it. Indeed, I went with Mosiah’s sons trying to destroy God’s congregation. But God sent His holy angel to stop us while we were making trouble. He spoke to us as if with a voice of thunder — the whole earth shook beneath our feet. And we all fell to the ground because we all feared the Lord. But the voice said to me: Get up. And I stood up on my feet and saw the angel. And he said to me: End your efforts to destroy the congregation, unless you want to be destroyed!

Paragraph 3

3

10 And it came to pass that I fell to the earth. And it was for the space of three days and three nights that I could not open my mouth, neither had I the use of my limbs. 11 And the angel spake more things unto me which were heard by my brethren, but I did not hear them, for when I heard the words — If thou wilt, be destroyed of thyself; seek no more to destroy the church of God — I was struck with such great fear and amazement, lest perhaps I should be destroyed, that I fell to the earth and I did hear no more. 12 But I was racked with Eternal torment, for my soul was harrowed up to the greatest degree and racked with all my sins. 13 Yea, I did remember all my sins and iniquities, for which I was tormented with the pains of hell. Yea, I saw that I had rebelled against my God and that I had not kept his holy commandments. 14 Yea, and I had murdered many of his children, or rather led them away unto destruction. Yea, and in fine, so great had been my iniquities that the very thought of coming into the presence of my God did rack my soul with inexpressible horror. 15 Oh, thought I, that I could be banished and become extinct, both soul and body, that I might not be brought to stand in the presence of my God to be judged of my deeds. 16 And now, for three days and for three nights was I racked, even with the pains of a damned soul.

Paragraph 3

3

10 Then I fell to the ground, and I couldn’t open my mouth or use my limbs for three days and nights. 11 And the angel said more things to me, which were heard by my companions, but I didn’t hear them. Because when I heard the words: End your efforts to destroy the congregation, unless you want to be destroyed! I was struck with such great fear and amazement thinking I might be destroyed, that I collapsed and didn’t hear anything else. 12 But I was tortured with eternal torment — my soul suffered to the greatest extent and was tortured by guilt over all my sins. 13 I remembered every sin and all my iniquities, and they tormented me with the pains of hell. Indeed, I could see my rebellion against God and that I hadn’t kept His holy commandments. 14 And I had effectively murdered many of His children by leading them away to destruction — to be clear, my iniquities had been so overwhelming that the very thought of coming into the presence of God tortured my soul with inexpressible horror. 15 I thought to myself: I wish I could vanish and cease all existence, both spirit and body, so I could avoid being brought to stand in the presence of God to be judged for my actions. 16 And now I was tortured with the pains of a damned soul for three days and nights.

Paragraph 4

4

17 And it came to pass that as I was thus racked with torment, while I was harrowed up by the memory of my many sins, behold, I remembered also to have heard my father prophesy unto the people concerning the coming of one Jesus Christ, a Son of God, to atone for the sins of the world. 18 Now as my mind catched hold upon this thought, I cried within my heart, O Jesus, thou Son of God, have mercy on me, who art in the gall of bitterness and art encircled about by the everlasting chains of death. 19 And now behold, when I thought this, I could remember my pains no more; yea, I was harrowed up by the memory of my sins no more. 20 And oh, what joy and what marvelous light I did behold! Yea, my soul was filled with joy as exceeding as was my pains. 21 Yea, I say unto you, my son, that there can be nothing so exquisite and so bitter as was my pains.

Paragraph 4

4

17 And as I was tortured like this, while I was pained by the memory of my many sins, I also remembered hearing my father prophesy to the people about the coming of one Jesus Christ, a Son of God, to atone for the world’s sins. 18 Now as my mind took ahold of this thought, I cried out within my heart: O Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me — I bitterly regret my life and I feel doomed to everlasting death. 19 Now when I prayed this, I was released from my pains; indeed, I was no longer tormented by the memory of my sins. 20 But then, I felt such joy, and I saw such light! My soul was filled with joy as great as had been my pains. 21 Indeed, I tell you, my son, nothing is as intense and bitter as were my pains.

Paragraph 5

5

Yea, and again I say unto you, my son, that on the other hand, there can be nothing so exquisite and sweet as was my joy. 22 Yea, and methought I saw, even as our father Lehi saw, God sitting upon his throne, surrounded with numberless concourses of angels in the attitude of singing and praising their God; yea, and my soul did long to be there. 23 But behold, my limbs did receive their strength again, and I stood upon my feet, and did manifest unto the people that I had been born of God. 24 Yea, and from that time even until now, I have labored without ceasing, that I might bring souls unto repentance, that I might bring them to taste of the exceeding joy of which I did taste, that they might also be born of God and be filled with the holy ghost.

Paragraph 5

5

But my son, on the other hand, from my experience there’s nothing as intense and sweet as was my joy. 22 And then I thought I saw — just like our forefather Lehi saw — God sitting on His throne, surrounded by numberless rings of angels engaged in singing and praising Him. And my soul longed to be there. 23 Then I recovered and my limbs got their strength back, and I stood on my feet and declared to the people that I had been born of God. 24 And from then on I’ve worked nonstop to bring souls to repentance, to bring them to taste the great joy I tasted, so they can also be born of God and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

Paragraph 6

6

25 Yea, and now behold, O my son, the Lord doth give me exceeding great joy in the fruits of my labors. 26 For because of the word which he has imparted unto me, behold, many have been born of God, and have tasted as I have tasted, and have seen eye to eye as I have seen. Therefore, they do know of these things of which I have spoken as I do know; and the knowledge which I have is of God. 27 And I have been supported under trials and troubles of every kind, yea, and in all manner of afflictions. Yea, God has delivered me from prisons, and from bonds, and from death. Yea, and I do put my trust in him, and he will still deliver me. 28 And I know that he will raise me up at the last day to dwell with him in glory. Yea, and I will praise him for ever, for he has brought our fathers out of Egypt, and he has swallowed up the Egyptians in the Red Sea, and he led them by his power into the promised land. Yea, and he has delivered them out of bondage and captivity from time to time. 29 Yea, and he has also brought our fathers out of the land of Jerusalem. And he has also, by his everlasting power, delivered them out of bondage and captivity from time to time, even down to the present day. And I have always retained in remembrance their captivity; yea, and ye also ought to retain in remembrance, as I have done, their captivity. 30 But behold, my son, this is not all, for ye ought to know as I do know that inasmuch as ye shall keep the commandments of God, ye shall prosper in the land. And ye ought to know also that inasmuch as ye will not keep the commandments of God, ye shall be cut off from his presence. Now this is according to his word.

Paragraph 6

6

25 And now, my son, the Lord has given me satisfying joy from the results of my labors. 26 Because of the word He’s freely given me, many have been born of God and have experienced what I have, and have seen with their own eyes as I have. Therefore they understand the things I’ve taught, just as I know they’re true; and the knowledge I have comes from God. 27 I’ve been strengthened in the face of every one of my trials and troubles, and in all my suffering. Indeed, God has rescued me from prisons, chains, and death — yes, I put my trust in Him and know He’ll always rescue me. 28 I know He’ll raise me up on the last day to live with Him in glory, and I’ll praise Him forever. He brought our ancestors out of Egypt, and He drowned the Egyptians in the Red Sea, and He led them by His power into the promised land. He has freed them from slavery and captivity from time to time. 29 He also led our ancestors out of the land of Jerusalem, and He has, by His everlasting power, freed them from slavery and captivity from time to time, all the way down to the present time. And I’ve always kept in mind their enslavement; and you also ought to remember their enslavement, as I have. 30 But, my son, this isn’t everything. I promise you that to the extent you keep God’s commandments, you’ll prosper in the land; and I promise you that to the extent you don’t keep God’s commandments, you’ll be cut off from His presence. Now this is based upon His word.

Paragraph 7

7

37 And now, my son Helaman, I command you that ye take the records which have been entrusted with me. 2 And I also command you that ye keep a record of this people according as I have done, upon the plates of Nephi, and keep all these things sacred which I have kept, even as I have kept them — for it is for a wise purpose that they are kept — 3 and these plates of brass which contain these engravings, which have the records of the holy scriptures upon them, which have the genealogy of our forefathers, even from the beginning. 4 And behold, it has been prophesied by our fathers that they should be kept and handed down from one generation to another, and be kept and preserved by the hand of the Lord until they should go forth unto every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, that they shall know of the mysteries contained thereon. 5 And now behold, if they are kept, they must retain their brightness, yea, and they will retain their brightness, yea, and also shall all the plates which do contain that which is holy writ.

Paragraph 7

7

37 And now, my son Helaman, I command you to take the records that have been entrusted to me. And I also command you to maintain a record of this people on the plates of Nephi, in the same way I have, and keep these things sacred which I’ve protected, just as I’ve kept them sacred. They’ve been maintained and kept safe for a wise purpose. Also protect these brass plates containing these engravings, which have the records of the holy scriptures on them and our ancestors’ genealogy, from the very beginning. It has been prophesied by our forefathers that they’re to be maintained and kept safe and handed down from one generation to another, to be protected and preserved by the Lord until they’re published to all people of every nation, tribe, and language, to let them know of the mysteries they contain. Now if they’re protected and maintained, they’ll absolutely retain their brilliance. And they will do so! So will all the plates containing sacred writings.

Paragraph 8

8

6 Now ye may suppose that this is foolishness in me, but behold, I say unto you that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass, and small means in many instances doth confound the wise. 7 And the Lord God doth work by means to bring about his great and eternal purposes, and by very small means the Lord doth confound the wise and bringeth about the salvation of many souls. 8 And now, it has hitherto been wisdom in God that these things should be preserved. For behold, they have enlarged the memory of this people, yea, and convinced many of the error of their ways and brought them to the knowledge of their God, unto the salvation of their souls. 9 Yea, I say unto you, were it not for these things that these records do contain, which are on these plates, Ammon and his brethren could not have convinced so many thousands of the Lamanites of the incorrect tradition of their fathers. Yea, these records and their words brought them unto repentance; that is, they brought them to the knowledge of the Lord their God, and to rejoice in Jesus Christ their Redeemer. 10 And who knoweth but what they will be the means of bringing many thousands of them, yea, and also many thousands of our stiffnecked brethren the Nephites, who are now hardening their hearts in sins and iniquities, to the knowledge of their Redeemer. 11 Now these mysteries are not yet fully made known unto me, therefore I shall forbear. 12 And it may suffice if I only say they are preserved for a wise purpose, which purpose is known unto God; for he doth counsel in wisdom over all his works, and his paths are straight, and his course is one eternal round.

Paragraph 8

8

Now you may think that I’m being foolish. But I tell you great things are accomplished by ordinary, simple things. And simple methods, in many instances, prove the wise are wrong. The Lord God can use anything to accomplish His great and eternal purposes. And by very simple methods the Lord proves the wise wrong and accomplishes the salvation of many souls. Now it has been wisdom in God for these things to be kept safe until now. Because they’ve increased our people’s memory and convinced many of the error of their ways and brought them to the knowledge of God, for the salvation of their souls. Indeed, I tell you: If it weren’t for the things contained in the records on these plates, Ammon and his companions wouldn’t have convinced so many thousands of the Lamanites of their ancestors’ false traditions. It was these records and their content that brought them to repentance; that is, they let them know of the Lord who is God and to rejoice in Jesus Christ their Redeemer. 10 And who knows whether they might turn out to be instruments in bringing many thousands more of them — and even many thousands of our stubborn fellow Nephites also, who are now hardening their hearts in sin and iniquities — to know of their Redeemer. 11 Now I don’t fully know about that future, so I’ll stop there. 12 It may be enough to simply say these records are kept safe for a wise purpose, a purpose that’s known to God. Because He wisely guides all His works, and His direction is straight and He moves continually in one eternal round.

Paragraph 9

9

13 O remember, remember, my son Helaman, how strict are the commandments of God. And he said, If ye will keep my commandments, ye shall prosper in the land, but if ye keep not his commandments, ye shall be cut off from his presence. 14 And now remember, my son, that God has entrusted you with these things which are sacred, which he has kept sacred, and also which he will keep and preserve for a wise purpose in him, that he may show forth his power unto future generations.

Paragraph 9

9

13 Remember, remember, my son Helaman, how strict God’s commandments are! He has said: To the extent you keep God’s commandments, you’ll prosper in the land; and to the extent you don’t keep God’s commandments, you’ll be cut off from His presence. 14 And now remember, my son, that God trusts you with these sacred things, which He made sacred and which He’ll watch over and keep safe for His own wise purpose, to preserve His influence with future generations.

Paragraph 10

10

15 And now behold, I tell you by the spirit of prophecy that if ye transgress the commandments of God, behold, these things which are sacred shall be taken away from you by the power of God, and ye shall be delivered up unto Satan, that he may sift you as chaff before the wind. 16 But if ye keep the commandments of God, and do with these things which are sacred according to that which the Lord doth command you — for you must appeal unto the Lord for all things whatsoever ye must do with them — behold, no power of earth or hell can take them from you, for God is powerful to the fulfilling of all his words. 17 For he will fulfill all his promises which he shall make unto you, for he has fulfilled his promise which he has made unto our fathers. 18 For he promised unto them that he would preserve these things for a wise purpose in him, that he might shew forth his power unto future generations.

Paragraph 10

10

15 Now I tell you by the spirit of prophecy that if you go against God’s commandments, you’ll lose these sacred things by God’s power and you’ll be handed over to Satan, and he’ll abuse you. 16 But if you keep God’s commandments and guard these sacred things as the Lord commands you (and you should always ask the Lord about how to accomplish your responsibilities), then no power of earth or hell can take them from you, since God has the power to vindicate all His words. 17 He’s sure to fulfill any promise He may make to you, since He’s kept the promise He made to our forefathers. 18 He promised them He would protect these things to preserve His influence with future generations.

Paragraph 11

11

19 And now behold, one purpose hath he fulfilled, even to the restoration of many thousands of the Lamanites to the knowledge of the truth. And he hath shewn forth his power in them, and he will also still shew forth his power in them unto future generations; therefore, they shall be preserved. 20 Therefore, I command you, my son Helaman, that ye be diligent in fulfilling all my words, and that ye be diligent in keeping the commandments of God as they are written.

Paragraph 11

11

19 And now He has fulfilled one purpose: that is, to restore thousands of Lamanites to the knowledge of the truth. He’s increased His influence with them. And He’ll likewise yet exert His influence through them to future generations. Consequently, they will be preserved. 20 So I command you, my son Helaman, to be diligent in following all my words and diligent in keeping God’s commandments as they’re written.

Paragraph 12

12

21 And now I will speak unto you concerning those twenty-four plates, that ye keep them — that the mysteries, and the works of darkness, and their secret works, or the secret works of those people who have been destroyed, may be made manifest unto this people; yea, all their murders and robbings, and their plunderings, and all their wickedness and abominations may be made manifest unto this people — yea, and that ye preserve these directors. 22 For behold, the Lord saw that his people began to work in darkness, yea, work secret murders and abominations. Therefore, the Lord said if they did not repent, they should be destroyed from off the face of the earth. 23 And the Lord said, I will prepare unto my servant Gazelem a stone which shall shine forth in darkness unto light, that I may discover unto my people who serve me, that I may discover unto them the works of their brethren — yea, their secret works, their works of darkness, and their wickedness and abominations. 24 And now, my son, these directors were prepared that the word of God might be fulfilled which he spake, saying, 25 I will bring forth out of darkness unto light all their secret works and their abominations, and except they repent, I will destroy them from off the face of the earth. And I will bring to light all their secrets and abominations unto every nation which shall hereafter possess the land. 26 And now, my son, we see that they did not repent. Therefore, they have been destroyed, and thus far the word of God has been fulfilled. Yea, their secret abominations have been brought out of darkness and made known unto us.

Paragraph 12

12

21 Now I’ll tell you about those 24 plates: You must keep them safe, so that the mysteries and their dark, secret schemes, the conspiracies of those people who were destroyed, can be revealed to this nation. They will need to hear about all their murders, robberies, plundering, wickedness, and abominations. And you must preserve these Directors. 22 When the Lord saw His people began to fall into dark acts and to commit secret murders and abominations, the Lord warned that if they didn’t repent, they would be altogether annihilated from the earth. 23 The Lord said: I’ll prepare a stone for My servant Gazelem that will bring their dark acts into the light, so I can expose for the people who serve Me the errors, depravity, and abominations of the earlier believers who fell into secret wickedness and dark works. 24 And now, my son, these Directors were prepared to accomplish the prophecies of God, which He committed to have happen, saying: 25 I’ll expose to public view, out of darkness into light, all their secret offenses and their abominations. And unless they repent, I’ll destroy them and annihilate them from the earth. And I’ll bring to light all their secrets and abominations to every nation who will inhabit the land after this. 26 And now, my son, we see they didn’t repent; therefore they’ve been removed. And so far God’s word has been fulfilled; indeed, their secret abominations have been brought out of darkness and revealed to us.

Paragraph 13

13

27 And now, my son, I command you that ye retain all their oaths, and their covenants, and their agreements in their secret abominations, yea, and all their signs and their wonders ye shall retain from this people, that they know them not, lest peradventure they should fall into darkness also and be destroyed. 28 For behold, there is a curse upon all this land, that destruction shall come upon all those workers of darkness, according to the power of God, when they are fully ripe; therefore, I desire that this people might not be destroyed. 29 Therefore, ye shall keep these secret plans of their oaths and their covenants from this people, and only their wickedness, and their murders, and their abominations shall ye make known unto them. And ye shall teach them to abhor such wickedness, and abominations, and murders, and ye shall also teach them that those people were destroyed on account of their wickedness and abominations, and their murders. 30 For behold, they murdered all the prophets of the Lord who came among them to declare unto them concerning their iniquities; and the blood of those whom they murdered did cry unto the Lord their God for vengeance upon those who were their murderers; and thus the judgments of God did come upon those workers of darkness and secret combinations. 31 Yea, and cursed be the land for ever and ever unto those workers of darkness and secret combinations, even unto destruction, except they repent before they are fully ripe.

Paragraph 13

13

27 And now, my son, I command you to not publish all their oaths, covenants, and agreements used in their secret abominations; indeed, you must continue protecting this people from all their signs and conspiracies, so they don’t learn them, so they can’t risk falling into darkness as well, and also be destroyed. 28 Remember, there’s a curse on all this land that any people who choose darkness until they’re fully ripe in iniquity, will be destroyed by God’s power. That being the case, I don’t want this people to be destroyed. 29 So you must protect this people from these secret plans of their oaths and covenants. And only reveal to them the wickedness, murders, and abominations. You must teach them to reject and regard such wickedness, abominations, and murders with disgust. You must also teach them the reason those people were destroyed was due to their wickedness, abominations, and murders. 30 Indeed, they murdered all the Lord’s prophets who came among them to condemn their iniquities. And the blood of those they murdered cried out to the Lord their God for vengeance upon their murderers. As a result, God’s judgments were imposed upon those who practiced that darkness and were part of the secret conspiracies. 31 And may the land be cursed forever against those who work in darkness, to their utter destruction, unless they repent before they’re fully ripe.

Paragraph 14

14

32 And now, my son, remember the words which I have spoken unto you. Trust not those secret plans unto this people, but teach them an everlasting hatred against sin and iniquity. 33 Preach unto them repentance and faith on the Lord Jesus Christ. Teach them to humble themselves and to be meek and lowly in heart. Teach them to withstand every temptation of the Devil with their faith on the Lord Jesus Christ. 34 Teach them to never be weary of good works, but to be meek and lowly in heart, for such shall find rest to their souls. 35 O remember, my son, and learn wisdom in thy youth; yea, learn in thy youth to keep the commandments of God. 36 Yea, and cry unto God for all thy support. Yea, let all thy doings be unto the Lord, and whithersoever thou goest, let it be in the Lord. Yea, let all thy thoughts be directed unto the Lord. Yea, let the affections of thy heart be placed upon the Lord for ever. 37 Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings and he will direct thee for good. Yea, when thou liest down at night, lie down unto the Lord, that he may watch over you in your sleep; and when thou risest in the morning, let thy heart be full of thanks unto God. And if ye always do these things, ye shall be lifted up at the last day.

Paragraph 14

14

32 Now, my son, remember the words that I’ve spoken to you. Don’t entrust those secret plans to this people, but teach them an everlasting hatred for sin and iniquity. 33 Preach to them repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Teach them to humble themselves and to be meek and humble in heart. Teach them to resist every temptation of the accuser with their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. 34 Teach them never to grow tired of doing good, but to be meek and humble in heart — because then they’ll find rest for their souls. 35 Remember, my son, and learn wisdom while you’re young; indeed, learn to keep God’s commandments while you’re young. 36 Cry to God in prayer — in all that you do — for help, strength, and comfort; and do everything you do for the Lord. And no matter where you go, go with the Lord. Direct all your thoughts to the Lord and always place your heart’s desires on the Lord. 37 Consult the Lord in everything you do, and He’ll direct you for good. When you lie down at night, lie down directing your thoughts and feelings to the Lord, asking Him to watch over you in your sleep. When you get up in the morning, let your heart be full of thanks to God. And if you always do these things, you’ll be lifted up on the last day.

Paragraph 15

15

38 And now, my son, I have somewhat to say concerning the thing which our fathers call a ball or director, or our fathers called it Liahona, which is (being interpreted) a compass; and the Lord prepared it. 39 And behold, there cannot any man work after the manner of so curious a workmanship. And behold, it was prepared to shew unto our fathers the course which they should travel in the wilderness; 40 and it did work for them according to their faith in God. Therefore, if they had faith to believe that God could cause that those spindles should point the way they should go, behold, it was done. Therefore, they had this miracle, and also many other miracles, wrought by the power of God, day by day. 41 Nevertheless, because those miracles were worked by small means, it did shew unto them marvelous works. They were slothful and forgot to exercise their faith and diligence, and then those marvelous works ceased and they did not progress in their journey. 42 Therefore, they tarried in the wilderness, or did not travel a direct course, and were afflicted with hunger and thirst because of their transgression.

Paragraph 15

15

38 Now, my son, I want to discuss the thing our forefathers called a ball or Director — or rather, they called it Liahona, which translates to a compass — that the Lord provided. 39 And no one can accomplish such intricate workmanship. It was provided to point the way for our ancestors to travel in the wilderness. 40 And it worked for them based on their faith in God. As a result, if they had faith to believe God would make the pins point the way to go, then it happened. Therefore they saw this miracle, and many other miracles, performed by God’s power day after day. 41 However, even though those miracles let them accomplish miraculous things, they happened by ordinary methods and they got lazy, took it for granted, and neglected to exercise their faith and diligence. So then the miracles stopped, and they didn’t make progress in their journey. 42 Then they wandered in the wilderness, no longer traveling a direct path, and suffered hunger and thirst due to their faithlessness.

Paragraph 16

16

43 And now, my son, I would that ye should understand that these things are not without a shadow. For as our fathers were slothful to give heed to this compass (now these things were temporal), they did not prosper; even so it is with things which are spiritual. 44 For behold, it is as easy to give heed to the word of Christ, which will point to you a straight course to eternal bliss, as it was for our fathers to give heed to this compass which would point unto them a straight course to the promised land. 45 And now I say, is there not a type in this thing? For just as surely as this director did bring our fathers, by following its course, to the promised land, shall the words of Christ, if we follow their course, carry us beyond this vale of sorrow into a far better land of promise.

Paragraph 16

16

43 Now, my son, I want you to understand these things foreshadow coming events. As our ancestors were disinclined to pay attention to this physical compass, they didn’t advance; so it is with spiritual things. 44 Because it’s the same thing to pay attention to Christ’s word, which will point out to you a straight path to eternal bliss, as it was for our ancestors to pay attention to this compass, which would point out to them a straight path to the promised land. 45 I ask you: Isn’t the one symbolic of the other? Because just as surely as this Director brought our ancestors, by following the way it pointed, to the promised land, so will Christ’s word, if we follow the way it points, take us beyond this valley of tears into a much better promised land.

Paragraph 17

17

46 O my son, do not let us be slothful because of the easiness of the way, for so was it with our fathers. For so was it prepared for them, that if they would look, they might live; even so it is with us. The way is prepared, and if we will look, we may live for ever. 47 And now, my son, see that ye take care of these sacred things, yea, see that ye look to God and live. Go unto this people and declare the word, and be sober. My son, farewell.

Paragraph 17

17

46 My son, let’s not get lazy because the way is simple, because our ancestors were like that. They had the way opened for them; if they would just look, they could live. And it’s the same for us: the way is still open; and if we choose to look, we can live forever. 47 And now, my son, please care for these sacred things. Indeed, see that you look to God and live. Go minister to this people and declare the word, and be serious in mind and purpose. Farewell my son.
