Paragraph 1

1

4 And now it came to pass that in the three hundred and sixty and third year, the Nephites did go up with their armies to battle against the Lamanites, out of the land of Desolation. 2 And it came to pass that the armies of the Nephites were driven back again to the land of Desolation. And while they were yet weary, a fresh army of the Lamanites did come upon them. And they had a sore battle, insomuch that the Lamanites did take possession of the city Desolation, and did slay many of the Nephites, and did take many prisoners; 3 and the remainder did flee and join the inhabitants of the city Teancum. Now the city Teancum lay in the borders by the seashore, and it was also near the city Desolation. 4 And it was because the armies of the Nephites went up unto the Lamanites that they began to be smitten — for were it not for that, the Lamanites could have had no power over them. 5 But behold, the judgments of God will overtake the wicked; and it is by the wicked that the wicked are punished, for it is the wicked that stir up the hearts of the children of men unto bloodshed. 6 And it came to pass that the Lamanites did make preparations to come against the city Teancum.

Paragraph 1

1

4 In the 363rd year, the Nephites attacked the Lamanites with their armed forces from the land of Desolation. But the Nephite forces were pushed back to the land of Desolation. While they were exhausted, a fresh Lamanite army attacked them. They had a fierce battle, resulting in the Lamanites taking the city of Desolation and killing many Nephites, and taking many prisoners. The survivors fled and joined the inhabitants of the city of Teancum. Now the city of Teancum was near the seashore, and close to the city of Desolation. It was because the Nephite armies attacked the Lamanites that they began to be destroyed; otherwise, the Lamanites wouldn’t have been able to defeat them. But God’s judgments will overtake the wicked. And it’s by the wicked that the wicked are punished. Because it’s the wicked who incite mankind to violence. And the Lamanites prepared to attack the city of Teancum.

Paragraph 2

2

7 And it came to pass in the three hundred and sixty and fourth year, the Lamanites did come against the city Teancum, that they might take possession of the city Teancum also. 8 And it came to pass that they were repulsed and driven back by the Nephites. And when the Nephites saw that they had driven the Lamanites, they did again boast of their own strength; and they went forth in their own might and took possession again of the city Desolation. 9 And now all these things had been done, and there had been thousands slain on both sides, both the Nephites and the Lamanites. 10 And it came to pass that the three hundred and sixty and sixth year had passed away. And the Lamanites came again upon the Nephites to battle, and yet the Nephites repented not of the evil they had done, but persisted in their wickedness continually. 11 And it is impossible for the tongue to describe or for man to write a perfect description of the horrible scene of the blood and carnage which was among the people, both of the Nephites and of the Lamanites. And every heart was hardened so that they delighted in the shedding of blood continually. 12 And there never had been so great wickedness among all the children of Lehi, nor even among all the house of Israel (according to the words of the Lord), as were among this people.

Paragraph 2

2

In the 364th year, the Lamanites attacked the city of Teancum, trying to take control of it. But they were repulsed and driven back by the Nephites. When the Nephites saw they had driven the Lamanites back, they again boasted about their strength. They went out relying on their own strength and retook the city of Desolation. Now thousands had been killed on both sides, on the part of both the Nephites and Lamanites while all this happened. 10 And the 366th year ended, and the Lamanites once again attacked the Nephites. Yet the Nephites didn’t repent but persisted in their wickedness. 11 It’s impossible for the tongue to describe or for a person to write a complete description of the horrible scene of blood and carnage that occurred among both the Nephites and Lamanites. Every heart was hardened so that they enjoyed killing continually. 12 There had never been such great wickedness among Lehi’s descendants, not even among the whole house of Israel, according to the Lord’s words, as took place among this people.

Paragraph 3

3

13 And it came to pass that the Lamanites did take possession of the city Desolation, and this because their number did exceed the number of the Nephites. 14 And they did also march forward against the city Teancum, and did drive the inhabitants forth out of her, and did take many prisoners of women and of children, and did offer them up as sacrifices unto their idol gods. 15 And it came to pass that in the three hundred and sixty and seventh year, the Nephites being angry because the Lamanites had sacrificed their women and their children, that they did go against the Lamanites with exceeding great anger, insomuch that they did beat again the Lamanites and drive them out of their lands. 16 And the Lamanites did not come again against the Nephites until the three hundred and seventy and fifth year. 17 And in this year they did come down against the Nephites with all their powers, and they were not numbered because of the greatness of their number. 18 And from this time forth did the Nephites gain no power over the Lamanites, but began to be swept off by them, even as a dew before the sun. 19 And it came to pass that the Lamanites did come down against the city Desolation, and there was an exceeding sore battle fought in the land Desolation, in the which they did beat the Nephites. 20 And they fled again from before them, and they came to the city Boaz; and there they did stand against the Lamanites with exceeding boldness, insomuch that the Lamanites did not beat them until they had come again the second time. 21 And when they had come the second time, the Nephites were driven and slaughtered with an exceeding great slaughter; their women and their children were again sacrificed unto idols. 22 And it came to pass that the Nephites did again flee from before them, taking all the inhabitants with them, both in towns and villages. 23 And now I, Mormon, seeing that the Lamanites were about to overthrow the land, therefore I did go to the hill Shim and did take up all the records which Ammaron had hid up unto the Lord.

Paragraph 3

3

13 The Lamanites took the city of Desolation — and this was because they outnumbered the Nephites. 14 They also marched against the city of Teancum and drove out the inhabitants and took many women and children prisoners, and then offered them up as sacrifices to their idol gods. 15 In the 367th year, the Nephites were angry because the Lamanites had sacrificed their women and children. And they attacked the Lamanites with fury, and again beat the Lamanites and drove them out of their lands. 16 The Lamanites didn’t return to attack the Nephites until the 375th year. 17 In that year, they came down and attacked them with all their power; there were so many they weren’t counted. 18 From that time on, the Nephites never had any success against the Lamanites, but began to be swept away like dew exposed to the sun. 19 The Lamanites attacked the city of Desolation. A terrible battle was fought in the land of Desolation, in which they defeated the Nephites. 20 The Nephites ran away to the city of Boaz. There they stood bravely against the Lamanites, and the Lamanites didn’t defeat them until a second attack. 21 When they attacked a second time, the Nephites were defeated and killed in a truly great slaughter, and their women and children were again sacrificed to idols. 22 The Nephites again fled, taking all the inhabitants with them, in both towns and villages. 23 When I could see the Lamanites were about to overthrow the land, I went to the hill Shim and recovered all the records Ammaron had hidden away under the Lord’s protection.

Paragraph 4

4

5 And it came to pass that I did go forth among the Nephites and did repent of the oath which I had made that I would no more assist them. And they gave me command again of their armies, for they looked upon me as though I could deliver them from their afflictions. 2 But behold, I was without hope, for I knew the judgments of the Lord which should come upon them; for they repented not of their iniquities, but did struggle for their lives without calling upon that Being who had created them. 3 And it came to pass that the Lamanites did come against us as we had fled to the city of Jordan, but behold, they were driven back that they did not take the city at that time. 4 And it came to pass that they came against us again, and we did maintain the city. And there were also other cities which were maintained by the Nephites, which strong holds did cut them off, that they could not get into the country which lay before us to destroy the inhabitants of our land. 5 But it came to pass that whatsoever lands we had passed by and the inhabitants thereof were not gathered in were destroyed by the Lamanites; and their towns, and villages, and cities were burned with fire. And thus the three hundred and seventy and nine years passed away. 6 And it came to pass that in the three hundred and eightieth year, the Lamanites did come again against us to battle, and we did stand against them boldly; but it was all in vain, for so great were their numbers that they did tread the people of the Nephites under their feet. 7 And it came to pass that we did again take to flight, and those whose flight were swifter than the Lamanites did escape, and those whose flight did not exceed the Lamanites were swept down and destroyed.

Paragraph 4

4

5 I then united with the Nephites and changed my mind about the oath I made not to help them anymore. They again gave me command of their armies because they looked on me as if I could rescue them from their terrible predicament. But I didn’t have any hope; I knew the Lord’s judgments would come upon them because they didn’t repent of their iniquities but fought for their lives without calling on that Being who had created them. The Lamanites attacked us after we had fled to the city of Jordan. But they were driven back and they didn’t take the city at that time. They attacked us again, and we kept the city. There were also other cities defended by the Nephites, and these strongholds stopped their advance, preventing them from entering the countryside behind this line to slaughter the inhabitants of our land. But any place we passed without bringing the inhabitants with us was destroyed by the Lamanites; all the towns, villages, and cities were burned down. And so 379 years came to an end. In the 380th year, the Lamanites attacked us again. We confronted them boldly. But it was useless, because their numbers were so large that they trampled the Nephites underfoot. And we fled again. Those who were faster than the Lamanites escaped; but those who weren’t faster were overtaken and killed.

Paragraph 5

5

8 And now behold, I, Mormon, do not desire to harrow up the souls of men in casting before them such an awful scene of blood and carnage as was laid before mine eyes. But I, knowing that these things must surely be made known, and that all things which are hid must be revealed upon the housetops, 9 and also that a knowledge of these things must come unto the remnant of this people, and also unto the gentiles which the Lord hath said should scatter this people — and this people should be counted as naught among them — therefore I write a small abridgement, daring not to give a full account of the things which I have seen, because of the commandment which I have received, and also that ye might not have too great sorrow because of the wickedness of this people.

Paragraph 5

5

Now I don’t intend to distress people’s souls by describing such an awful scene of blood and carnage as I witnessed. But I know these things must be made known. Everything hidden must be revealed on the housetops. Information about these events must be given to the remnant of this people and to the Gentiles the Lord said would scatter this people like they were nothing. Therefore I write a short summary because I was commanded to do this, not daring to give a full account of the things I’ve seen because it would be too distressing to describe fully the wickedness of this people.

Paragraph 6

6

10 And now behold, this I speak unto their seed, and also to the gentiles who have care for the house of Israel, that realize and know from whence their blessings come. 11 For I know that such will sorrow for the calamity of the house of Israel, yea, they will sorrow for the destruction of this people. They will sorrow that this people had not repented, that they might have been clasped in the arms of Jesus. 12 Now these things are written unto the remnant of the house of Jacob, and they are written after this manner because it is known of God that wickedness will not bring them forth unto them. And they are to be hid up unto the Lord, that they may come forth in his own due time. 13 And this is the commandment which I have received. And behold, they shall come forth according to the commandment of the Lord, when he shall see fit in his wisdom. 14 And behold, they shall go unto the unbelieving of the Jews. And for this intent shall they go, that they may be persuaded that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God; that the Father may bring about, through his Most Beloved, his great and eternal purpose in restoring the Jews, or all the house of Israel, to the land of their inheritance which the Lord their God hath given them, unto the fulfilling of his covenant; 15 and also that the seed of this people may more fully believe his gospel which shall go forth unto them from the gentiles. For this people shall be scattered, and shall become a dark, a filthy, and a loathsome people, beyond the description of that which ever hath been amongst us, yea, even that which hath been among the Lamanites, and this because of their unbelief and idolatry. 16 For behold, the spirit of the Lord hath already ceased to strive with their fathers, and they are without Christ and God in the world, and they are driven about as chaff before the wind. 17 They were once a delightsome people, and they had Christ for their shepherd. Yea, they were led even by God the Father. 18 But now behold, they are led about by Satan, even as chaff is driven before the wind, or as a vessel is tossed about upon the waves without sail or anchor, or without anything wherewith to steer her; and even as she is, so are they. 19 And behold, the Lord hath reserved their blessing, which they might have received in the land, for the gentiles who shall possess the land. 20 But behold, it shall come to pass that they shall be driven and scattered by the gentiles. And after they have been driven and scattered by the gentiles, behold, then will the Lord remember the covenant which he made unto Abraham and unto all the house of Israel. 21 And also the Lord will remember the prayers of the righteous which have been put up unto him for them.

Paragraph 6

6

10 This account is for their descendants and for the Gentiles who care about the house of Israel and realize where their blessings come from. 11 I know the Gentiles will mourn over the misfortunes of the house of Israel. Indeed, they’ll grieve over this people’s destruction. They’ll mourn that this people didn’t repent, to then be embraced in the arms of Jesus. 12 Now this record is for the remnant of Jacob’s family. This account exists because God knows it was wicked to try and prevent it from being openly exposed. These things are to be hidden away with the Lord’s protection, so they can come forth when He decides it’s the right time. 13 This is the commandment I’ve received. They’ll become available according to the Lord’s commandment when in His wisdom He determines it’s proper. 14 This record will go to the unbelieving Jews. They’ll get it to persuade them that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God. This is so the Father through His Most Beloved can accomplish His great commitment to restore the Jews and the whole house of Israel to the lands of their inheritance, which the Lord their God has given them, to fulfill His covenant. 15 It’s also for the descendants of this people to more fully believe in His gospel taught to them by the Gentiles. This people will be scattered and become a dark, filthy, and repulsive people, beyond the description of anything before among us or what happened among the Lamanites. This is the result of their unbelief and idol worship. 16 The Spirit of the Lord has already stopped influencing their fathers. They’re without Christ and God in the world, and they’re driven about by the wind like chaff. 17 They were once a delightful people. They had Christ for their shepherd; indeed, they were even led by God the Father. 18 But now they’re led about by Satan, just like chaff is driven by the wind, or like a vessel tossed about on the waves without a sail, anchor, or anything to steer her with; just as she is, so are they. 19 The Lord has reserved the blessing they could have received in the land for the Gentiles who will occupy the land. 20 They’ll be driven and scattered by the Gentiles. After they’ve been driven and scattered by the Gentiles, then the Lord will remember the covenant He made with Abraham for the whole house of Israel. 21 The Lord will also remember the prayers of the righteous offered to Him on their behalf.

Paragraph 7

7

22 And then, O ye gentiles, how can ye stand before the power of God except ye shall repent and turn from your evil ways? 23 Know ye not that ye are in the hands of God? Know ye not that he hath all power, and at his great command the earth shall be rolled together as a scroll? 24 Therefore, repent ye, and humble yourselves before him, lest he shall come out in justice against you, lest a remnant of the seed of Jacob shall go forth among you as a lion and tear you in pieces, and there is none to deliver.

Paragraph 7

7

22 Then, all you Gentiles, how will you survive against God’s power unless you repent and turn away from doing evil? 23 Don’t you realize you’re in God’s hands? Don’t you realize He has all power and at His great command the earth will be rolled together as a scroll? 24 Therefore repent and humble yourselves before Him so His judgment isn’t imposed also on you, with the remnant of Jacob’s descendants coming among you as a young lion to tear you apart, with no one to rescue you.
