Book of Mormon
Covenant of Christ
Paragraph 1
1
And it came to pass that after Abinadi had made an end of these sayings, that he said unto them, Have ye taught this people that they should observe to do all these things for to keep these commandments? 26 I say unto you, nay; for if ye had, the Lord would not have caused me to come forth and to prophesy evil concerning this people. 27 And now ye have said that salvation cometh by the law of Moses. I say unto you that it is expedient that ye should keep the law of Moses as yet; but I say unto you that the time shall come when it shall no more be expedient to keep the law of Moses. 28 And moreover, I say unto you that salvation doth not come by the law alone; and were it not for the atonement which God himself shall make for the sins and iniquities of his people, that they must unavoidably perish, notwithstanding the law of Moses. 29 And now I say unto you that it was expedient that there should be a law given to the children of Israel, yea, even a very strict law. For they were a stiffnecked people, quick to do iniquity and slow to remember the Lord their God. 30 Therefore there was a law given them, yea, a law of performances and of ordinances, a law which they were to observe strictly from day to day, to keep them in remembrance of God and their duty towards him. 31 But behold, I say unto you that all these things were types of things to come.
Paragraph 1
1
After Abinadi had finished saying this, he asked them: Have you taught these people to take care to do all these things, to keep these commandments? 26 I tell you: No. Because if you had, the Lord wouldn’t have had me come and prophesy evil about this people. 27 Now you’ve said that salvation comes by the Law of Moses. I tell you, while it’s still necessary for you to keep the Law of Moses, the time will come when it won’t be necessary to keep it anymore. 28 Furthermore, I declare that salvation doesn’t come by the Law alone. If it weren’t for the atonement God Himself will make for His people’s sins and iniquities, they would unavoidably perish, despite the Law of Moses. 29 You should understand that it was necessary for there to be a very strict law given to the Israelites. They were a stubborn people, quick to commit iniquity and slow to remember the Lord who is God. 30 So a law of performances and ordinances was given to them, one they were to strictly follow on a daily basis to remind them of God and their duty toward Him. 31 But I tell you all these things symbolized what was to come.
Paragraph 2
2
32 And now did they understand the law? I say unto you, nay, they did not all understand the law — and this because of the hardness of their hearts — for they understood not that there could not any man be saved except it were through the redemption of God. 33 For behold, did not Moses prophesy unto them concerning the coming of the Messiah and that God should redeem his people? Yea, and even all the prophets who have prophesied ever since the world began — have they not spoken more or less concerning these things? 34 Have they not said that God himself should come down among the children of men, and take upon him the form of man, and go forth in mighty power upon the face of the earth? 35 Yea, and have they not said also that he should bring to pass the resurrection of the dead? And that he himself should be oppressed and afflicted?
Paragraph 2
2
32 Now, did they understand the Law? I tell you: No, not all of them understood the Law — because of the hardness of their hearts. They didn’t understand that no one could be saved except through God’s redemption. 33 Didn’t Moses prophesy to them about the coming Messiah and that God would redeem His people? Yes, and even all the prophets that have prophesied ever since the world began, haven’t they spoken more or less about these things? 34 Haven’t they said that God Himself would come down among mankind and take upon Himself the form of a man and go about in great power on the earth? 35 And haven’t they also said He would enable the resurrection of the dead and that He Himself would be oppressed and afflicted?
Paragraph 3
3
14 Yea, even doth not Isaiah say, Who hath believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? 2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground. He hath no form nor comeliness, and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He is despised and rejected of men — a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from him. He was despised and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows, yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
Paragraph 3
3
14 Of course, doesn’t Isaiah say: Who believes what we’ve heard? Who’s heard the Lord’s revelation? 2 For He’ll grow up with His favor like a lively vine springing from the desert ground. He has no rank or position deserving respect, and when we notice Him, there’s nothing about Him to please us. 3 He is despised and rejected by men — a man of sorrow and familiar with disease. And we turned our faces away, ignoring Him. He was despised and thought to be of no value. 4 Yet it was our sickness He took upon Himself, our suffering He endured.
Paragraph 4
4
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we, like sheep, have gone astray — we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquities of us all. 7 He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter; and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment. And who shall declare his generation? 9 For he was cut off out of the land of the living; for the transgressions of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death. Because he had done no evil, neither was any deceit in his mouth; 10 yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief.
Paragraph 4
4
5 He suffered for our sins, healed our sickness; was punished for our iniquities, bearing our guilt to completely restore us. 6 We all strayed like sheep, wandering off — each one going their own way; and the Lord has imposed on Him the guilt belonging to us all. 7 He was oppressed and submitted, without complaining; like a lamb brought to be slaughtered, and as a ewe is silent while they shear her, so He endured without opening His mouth. 8 He was condemned by an unjust judgment. There were none who defended Him. For He was slain as a sacrifice for the transgressions of My people, who deserved the punishment. 9 He died with the wicked, and was buried with the rich. Though He had done no evil, nor had He declared anything untrue; 10 but the Lord was content with His offering; satisfied with His healing.
Paragraph 5
5
When thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed; he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. 11 He shall see of the travail of his soul and shall be satisfied; by his knowledge shall my righteous Servant justify many, for he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong — because he hath poured out his soul unto death, and he was numbered with the transgressors, and he bare the sins of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Paragraph 5
5
After He made himself a sin offering, He’ll inherit offspring, obtain eternal life, and vindicate God’s promises. 11 He’ll see His sacrifice and will be satisfied; by the understanding He gains, the righteous Servant will make many others righteous, for He’ll remove their iniquities. 12 Therefore I intend for Him to inherit multitudes, and His triumph will endow Him eternally — because He submitted willingly to death, and He was regarded as a sinner; but instead, He took on other’s guilt while making intercession for sinners.
Paragraph 6
6
15 And now Abinadi said unto them, I would that ye should understand that God himself shall come down among the children of men and shall redeem his people. 2 And because he dwelleth in flesh, he shall be called the Son of God; and having subjected the flesh to the will of the Father, being the Father and the Son — 3 the Father because he was conceived by the power of God, and the Son because of the flesh, thus becoming the Father and Son (4 and they are one God, yea, the very Eternal Father of Heaven and of earth), 5 and thus the flesh becoming subject to the spirit, or the Son to the Father, being one God — suffereth temptation and yieldeth not to the temptation, but suffereth himself to be mocked, and scourged, and cast out, and disowned by his people.
Paragraph 6
6
15 Then Abinadi said to them: I want you to understand that God Himself will come down among mankind and redeem His people. 2 And because He’ll dwell in the flesh, He’ll be called the Son of God. He’ll subject the flesh to the Father’s will, gaining the role of the Father and the Son: 3 the Father because He was conceived by God’s power and the Son because of the flesh, becoming the Father and Son in this way. 4 And they’re united as one God — indeed, the very Eternal Father of heaven and earth. 5 So the flesh becomes subject to the Spirit, or the Son to the Father, being one God, suffering temptation and not yielding to it, but allowing Himself to be mocked, whipped, thrown out, and disowned by His people.
Paragraph 7
7
6 And after all this, and after working many mighty miracles among the children of men, he shall be led, yea, even as Isaiah said, As a sheep before the shearer is dumb, so he opened not his mouth. 7 Yea, even so he shall be led, crucified, and slain, the flesh becoming subject even unto death, the will of the Son being swallowed up in the will of the Father. 8 And thus God breaketh the bands of death, having gained the victory over death, giving the Son power to make intercession for the children of men, 9 having ascended into Heaven, having the bowels of mercy, being filled with compassion toward the children of men, standing betwixt them and justice, having broken the bands of death, having taken upon himself their iniquity and their transgressions, having redeemed them and satisfied the demands of justice.
Paragraph 7
7
6 After all this, and after performing many mighty miracles among mankind, He’ll be led, just as Isaiah said, as a ewe is silent while they shear her, so He endured without opening His mouth. 7 Yes, He’ll be led, crucified, and killed, the mortal flesh fully surrendering to death, the Son’s will submitting entirely to the Father’s will. 8 And so God breaks the chains of death, gaining victory over death, giving the Son power to make intercession for mankind, 9 having ascended into heaven, showing tender mercy, being filled with compassion toward mankind, standing between them and justice, having conquered death, Himself assuming responsibility for their transgressions and iniquity, having redeemed them, and satisfied the demands of justice.
Paragraph 8
8
10 And now I say unto you, who shall declare his generation? Behold, I say unto you that when his soul has been made an offering for sin, he shall see his seed. And now what say ye? And who shall be his seed? 11 Behold, I say unto you that whosoever has heard the words of the prophets, yea, all the holy prophets who have prophesied concerning the coming of the Lord, I say unto you that all those who have hearkened unto their words, and believed that the Lord would redeem his people, and have looked forward to that day for a remission of their sins, I say unto you that these are his seed, or they are heirs of the kingdom of God. 12 For these are they whose sins he hath borne; these are they for whom he has died, to redeem them from their transgressions. And now, are they not his seed? 13 Yea, and are not the prophets, every one that has opened his mouth to prophesy that has not fallen into transgression? (I mean all the holy prophets ever since the world began.) I say unto you that they are his seed. 14 And these are they who have published peace, who have brought good tidings of good, who have published salvation and said unto Zion, Thy God reigneth. 15 And oh how beautiful upon the mountains were their feet. 16 And again, how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those that art still publishing peace. 17 And again, how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those who shall hereafter publish peace, yea, from this time henceforth and for ever!
Paragraph 8
8
10 Now I ask you: Who will identify His sons and daughters? I tell you that after His life has been made a sin offering, He’ll reclaim His children. Now, what do you say? Who will be His children? 11 I tell you that whoever has believed the prophets’ words — moreover, all the holy prophets who have prophesied about the Lord’s coming, I tell you that all those who have followed their words and believed that the Lord would redeem His people and have looked forward to that day for a remission of their sins, I tell you that these are His children, or they are heirs of God’s kingdom. 12 These are the ones whose sins He has borne; these are the ones He has died for, to redeem them from their transgressions. And now, are they not His children? 13 And the prophets, every one who’s proclaimed His messages, who hasn’t fallen into transgression — I mean all the holy prophets since the world began — I tell you that they are His children. 14 These are the ones announcing good news, that proclaim peace, that report coming good fortune, announcing victory, telling Zion: Your God reigns! 15 How welcome on the mountain are their footsteps! 16 And how welcome on the mountain are the footsteps of those who are still announcing victory! 17 Again, how welcome on the mountain are the footsteps of those who will continue announcing victory from now on and forever!
Paragraph 9
9
18 And behold, I say unto you, this is not all; for oh how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings — that is, the Founder of Peace, yea, even the Lord, who has redeemed his people, yea, him who hath granted salvation unto his people! 19 For were it not for the redemption which he hath made for his people, which was prepared from the foundation of the world, I say unto you, were it not for this, that all mankind must have perished. 20 But behold, the bands of death shall be broken, and the Son reigneth and hath power over the dead; therefore he bringeth to pass the resurrection of the dead. 21 And there cometh a resurrection, even a first resurrection, yea, even a resurrection of those that have been, and who are, and who shall be, even until the resurrection of Christ — for so shall he be called. 22 And now the resurrection of all the prophets and all those that have believed in their words (or all those that have kept the commandments of God) shall come forth in the first resurrection; therefore they are the first resurrection. 23 They are raised to dwell with God, who has redeemed them. Thus they have eternal life through Christ, who hath broken the bands of death.
Paragraph 9
9
18 I tell you: This isn’t all. Again, how welcome on the mountain are the footsteps of Him who brings good news and is the Founder of peace — meaning, the Lord who’s redeemed and granted His people salvation. 19 If it weren’t for the redemption He has made for His people, which was planned from the start of creation, I say that if it weren’t for this — all mankind would be doomed. 20 But the chains of death will be broken. And the Son’s authority includes power over the dead; therefore He owns the resurrection of the dead. 21 And a resurrection is coming, that is a first resurrection, of those who have lived, now live, and will live, up until the resurrection of Christ (and that is His name). 22 Now the resurrection of all the prophets and those who have believed their messages — or those who have kept God’s commandments — are the ones who will come forth in the first resurrection; therefore that is the initial resurrection. 23 They’re raised to live with God, who’s redeemed them. So they have eternal life through the Messiah, who’s broken the chains of death.
Paragraph 10
10
24 And there are those who have part in the first resurrection; and these are they that have died before Christ came, in their ignorance, not having salvation declared unto them. And thus the Lord bringeth about the restoration of these, and they have a part in the first resurrection or have eternal life, being redeemed by the Lord. 25 And little children also have eternal life.
Paragraph 10
10
24 And those who have died in ignorance before the Messiah came, not having salvation taught to them, are also included in the first resurrection. So the Lord brings about their restoration, and they’re included as part of the first resurrection, or have eternal life, being redeemed by the Lord. 25 And little children also have eternal life.
Paragraph 11
11
26 But behold, and fear, and tremble before God — for ye ought to tremble — for the Lord redeemeth none such that rebel against him and die in their sins, yea, even all those that have perished in their sins ever since the world began, that have willfully rebelled against God, that have known the commandments of God and would not keep them. These are they that have no part in the first resurrection. 27 Therefore, had ye not ought to tremble? For salvation cometh to none such, for the Lord hath redeemed none such. Yea, neither can the Lord redeem such, for he cannot deny himself; for he cannot deny justice when it hath its claim.
Paragraph 11
11
26 However, beware and fearful of God’s judgment of you — as you should — because the Lord doesn’t redeem anyone who rebels against Him and dies in their sins. Understand that everyone, from the beginning, who deliberately refuses to follow God while knowing His commandments, won’t be redeemed by Him. These people don’t have any part in the first resurrection. 27 Therefore shouldn’t you be afraid? Because the Lord hasn’t redeemed anyone like that, and salvation doesn’t come to anyone like that. And He can’t redeem them either, for He can’t go back on His word or deny justice when it applies.
Paragraph 12
12
28 And now I say unto you that the time shall come that the salvation of the Lord shall be declared to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. 29 Yea, Lord, thy watchmen shall lift up their voice; with the voice together shall they sing. For they shall see eye to eye when the Lord shall bring again Zion. 30 Break forth into joy. Sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem. For the Lord hath comforted his people; he hath redeemed Jerusalem. 31 The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
Paragraph 12
12
28 Now I tell you that the time will come when the Lord’s salvation will be declared to all people of every nation, tribe, and language. 29 Listen, your border guards shout out together their joyful praise, for everyone will witness the Lord’s return to Zion. 30 Everyone will proclaim together, O ruins of Jerusalem! The Lord now comforts you His people, coming to redeem Jerusalem. 31 The Lord will bare His holy arm in the sight of every nation, and all will see God’s victory to the very end of the earth.
Paragraph 13
13
16 And now it came to pass that after Abinadi had spoken these words, he stretched forth his hands and said, The time shall come when all shall see the salvation of the Lord, when every nation, kindred, tongue, and people shall see eye to eye and shall confess before God that his judgments are just. 2 And then shall the wicked be cast out, and they shall have cause to howl, and weep, and wail, and gnash their teeth; and this because they would not hearken unto the voice of the Lord. Therefore the Lord redeemeth them not. 3 For they are carnal and devilish; and the Devil has power over them, yea, even that old serpent that did beguile our first parents, which was the cause of their fall, which was the cause of all mankind’s becoming carnal, sensual, devilish, knowing evil from good, subjecting themselves to the Devil. 4 Thus, all mankind were lost. And behold, they would have been endlessly lost were it not that God redeemed his people from their lost and fallen state. 5 But remember that he that persists in his own carnal nature, and goes on in the ways of sin and rebellion against God, he remains in his fallen state and the Devil hath all power over him. Therefore, he is as though there was no redemption made, being an enemy to God; and also is the Devil an enemy to God.
Paragraph 13
13
16 After Abinadi had spoken these words, he reached out his arms and said: The time will come when everyone will see the Lord’s salvation, when all people of every nation, tribe, and language will see with their own eyes and acknowledge before God that His judgments are correct. 2 Then the wicked will be thrown out, and they’ll have a reason to howl, weep, wail, and grind their teeth — because they wouldn’t hearken to the Lord’s voice. Therefore the Lord won’t redeem them. 3 Because they’re carnal and devilish; and the accuser has power over them. Indeed, that old snake who deceived our first parents, which was the cause of their fall, resulting in mankind becoming carnal, sensual, devilish, knowing evil from good, and subjecting themselves to the accuser. 4 All mankind was then lost and they would have been permanently lost if God hadn’t redeemed His people from their lost and fallen state. 5 But remember that those who persist in their own carnal nature and follow sin and rebellion against God will remain in their fallen state, and the accuser has influence over them. So they’re as if no redemption had been made — effectively enemies of God; and the accuser is clearly an enemy of God.
Paragraph 14
14
6 And now, if Christ had not come into the world, speaking of things to come as though they had already come, there could have been no redemption. 7 And if Christ had not risen from the dead, or have broken the bands of death, that the grave should have no victory and that death should have no sting, there could have been no resurrection. 8 But there is a resurrection; therefore the grave hath no victory, and the sting of death is swallowed up in Christ. 9 He is the light and the life of the world — yea, a light that is endless, that can never be darkened, yea, and also a life which is endless, that there can be no more death. 10 Even this mortal shall put on immortality, and this corruption shall put on incorruption, and shall be brought to stand before the bar of God to be judged of him according to their works, whether they be good or whether they be evil: 11 if they be good, to the resurrection of endless life and happiness, and if they be evil, to the resurrection of endless damnation, being delivered up to the Devil who hath subjected them, which is damnation, 12 having gone according to their own carnal wills and desires, having never called upon the Lord while the arms of mercy were extended towards them. For the arms of mercy were extended towards them and they would not, they being warned of their iniquities, and yet they would not depart from them. And they were commanded to repent, and yet they would not repent.
Paragraph 14
14
6 Now if the Messiah had not come into the world — speaking of future events as if they had already happened — there would have been no redemption. 7 And if the Messiah hadn’t risen from the dead or broken the chains of death — so that the grave had no victory and death no bite — there would have been no resurrection. 8 But there is a resurrection. Therefore the grave doesn’t have any victory, and death’s bite is swallowed up through the Messiah. 9 He is the light and life of the world, an endless light that can never be darkened and an endless life so there is no more death. 10 This mortal body will become immortal, and our decaying flesh will become free from decay, and in our bodies we’ll stand before the judgment seat of God to be judged by Him. Judged based on our works, whether they’re good or evil: 11 if good, to the resurrection of endless life and happiness; and if evil, to the resurrection of endless damnation, handed over to the accuser, who has authority over the condemned, which is damnation. 12 They lived unworthy, selfish lives, never repenting and asking forgiveness from the Lord, although He was always ready to forgive; they refused His mercy. They ignored warnings about their iniquities, and they wouldn’t abandon them. And though they were commanded to repent, they refused to repent.
Paragraph 15
15
13 And now had ye not ought to tremble and repent of your sins? And remember, only in and through Christ ye can be saved. 14 Therefore, if ye teach the law of Moses, also teach that it is a shadow of those things which are to come. 15 Teach them that redemption cometh through Christ the Lord, who is the very Eternal Father. Amen.
Paragraph 15
15
13 Now shouldn’t you fear God’s judgment and repent of your sins? Remember, you can be saved only in and through the Messiah. 14 Therefore if you teach the Law of Moses, also teach that it foreshadows what’s coming. 15 Teach them that redemption comes through Christ the Lord, who is the very Eternal Father. Amen.
